Overview
Choosing a versatile motorcycle to devour kilometers without a second thought often leads you to circling the same model. The BMW R 1250 GS occupies this territory with a consistency that annoys its competitors and reassures its owners for years. For 2022, Munich isn’t reinventing the formula; it’s refining it.

The ShiftCam boxer remains the centerpiece of the system. This 1254 cm3 flat twin features a variable valve timing system that uses two cam profiles depending on engine speed: short lift and low-end flexibility, and a full opening at high RPM. As a result, 136 horsepower arrives at 7750 rpm, but it’s the 143 Nm of torque at 6500 rpm that really changes the game in everyday use. You don’t gain that many Nm just with a few extra cubic centimeters; it’s the variable valve timing management that does the work. In comparison, the Ducati Multistrada V4 produces more raw power, but the German bike responds with a noticeably more accessible RPM range, and a shaft drive that eliminates all chain maintenance hassles on long distances.
The 2022 BMW R 1250 GS inherits the Euro5 upgrade started on the previous generation: traction control DTC, Integral ABS Pro, and 12V/USB sockets join the standard equipment, as does Eco mode. The 6.5-inch TFT screen, formerly optional, now comes standard and allows smartphone connectivity, call management, and basic GPS. It’s the bare minimum for a motorcycle at €18,900, and you can only regret that heated grips remain an option when less expensive machines include them as standard. BMW sells its accessories at a premium, and BMW R 1250 GS used buyers know this, scrutinizing listings to find a version already loaded with extras.
With 249 kg when fully fueled and a 850 mm seat height, the GS is intimidating in the parking lot. After the first few meters, the weight distribution and front Telelever do their work: the motorcycle neutralizes, the weight disappears in the dynamics. The rear Paralever manages braking and acceleration reactions with a precision that few single-purpose machines achieve. For long journeys, the 19.68-liter fuel tank combined with measured consumption of around 4.75 L/100 km provides a range of over 400 km without looking for a gas station. The announced top speed of 193 km/h is more than sufficient for continental highways, and the BMW R 1250 GS Adventure extends this logic with an even larger fuel tank for long-distance raids.
The available riding modes standard include Rain, Road, and Eco. Unlocking Dynamic, Enduro, and Enduro Pro requires opening your wallet for the Riding Modes Pro pack. The same logic applies to the semi-active ESA Next Generation suspension, which continuously adapts damping according to load and road surface. Practical, but not included. This commercial mechanism is found on all variants, whether it’s the Triple Black version, which is more road-oriented, or the Rallye variants with spoked rims, which are more track-oriented. The target audience is broad: the long-distance rider who chains 600 km per day without fatigue, the traveler who wants to leave lightly with the BMW R 1250 GS Vario cases, or the rider who wants to venture off-road with the Enduro pack. Everyone finds their variant, and that’s precisely what makes competition so difficult to position against it.
This generation doesn’t mark a stylistic turning point. The lines pick up those of the previous generation without seeking to surprise the eye. BMW assumes: we consolidate rather than revolutionize. This conservative approach has its limits in terms of design, but it preserves a consistency that BMW R 1250 GS 2022 priced buyers weigh above all in terms of resale value and proven reliability. The GS remains what it has been for a long time: a benchmark built to last, not on hype.
