Overview

For twenty years, the Bavarian trail has reigned supreme in its category, and yet the question returns with each new generation: what can BMW still invent to justify the price and enthusiasm surrounding the BMW R 1250 GS? The answer lies in two letters and a number: ShiftCam. A variable valve timing system that changes the cam profile depending on engine speed, switching between a short lift for low revs and a full lift for the upper part of the rev range. Specifically, an electromechanical actuator pilots a barrel at the end of the camshaft, selecting one or the other profile in milliseconds. The result is reflected in the figures: 136 horsepower at 7750 rpm, and especially 143 Nm at 6500 rpm. This torque, significantly higher than the 1200, is not solely explained by the additional 84 cc added to the displacement. This is precisely where ShiftCam makes the difference, making the engine generous from the first few thousand rpm, where a trail travels and carries loads.

The chassis, however, does not change the recipe. Steel frame with engine as a stressed member, monocoque swingarm with Paralever cardan, Telelever fork at the front: the BMW R 1250 GS 2020 retains the architecture that has made the 1200 successful for years. The wheelbase gains 18 mm, reaching 1525 mm, the total weight rises to 249 kg at full weight. This figure still raises eyebrows on paper; on the road, it becomes anecdotal as soon as speed exceeds idle. The balance of masses, worked by engineers who know their business, compensates for what the scale displays. The 850 mm seat may deter shorter riders, and BMW also offers a lower version — opinions on the lower BMW R 1250 GS are generally positive, even if it modifies the geometry noticeably.

Electronic equipment constitutes the other area where Munich does not skimp, provided you are willing to pay for it. As standard, there are two riding modes, the ASC traction control system, hill start assist, and switchable ABS. The 6.5-inch color TFT screen with Bluetooth connectivity finally arrives as standard, after having long been an expensive option. To go further, you need to reach for your checkbook: the Pro pack unlocks Enduro, Dynamic modes, an active cornering ABS, the DTC traction control system, and engine braking management. The semi-active ESA Next Generation suspensions, available as an option, continuously adjust the ride height according to the load and selected mode. It is effective, well thought out, and also embodies the house philosophy: BMW R 1250 GS base price at €18,100, but the final bill with options quickly climbs. Some functions, such as heated grips, would have deserved to be standard for a long time, when other manufacturers like KTM or Ducati integrate them without supplement on their premium trails.

In terms of variants, BMW plays on equipment segmentation rather than colors. The HP version, the most off-road oriented, is distinguished by gold-spoked wheels, a short screen, and the option to choose a sport chassis with increased suspension travel. It clearly targets the public looking to explore beyond tarmac, before moving on to the BMW R 1250 GS Adventure for long-distance raids with BMW R 1250 GS vario cases and an enlarged tank. The Exclusive version focuses on visual refinement, with gold calipers and aluminum side panels, for urban users or long-distance travelers who want to display a certain idea of premium. On the BMW R 1250 GS used market, these different finishes significantly influence prices, whether on specialized platforms or at dealerships.

This trail remains what it has always been: a machine designed to devour kilometers without tiring either the rider or the mechanic, with German reliability and versatility that few competitors truly reach. The maximum speed announced at 200 km/h is not the point; the real performance of the GS is to cover 600 km in a day arriving fresh, to cross a forest track without damage, then to return to the city without fighting with the motorcycle. The BMW R 1250 GS HP 2020 pushes this logic one step further in terms of sensations. ShiftCam is a real mechanical advancement, not a marketing argument. The price remains high, some options would deserve to be standard, and the design has not evolved by a centime. But if you are looking for the motorcycle that does everything well without ever disappointing, the list of serious alternatives remains short.
