Overview
It was with astonishment that the world discovered a trail bike from Harley; the surprise was just as great when it received a CVO version. Harley-Davidson’s high-end customization department had so accustomed us to dominating customs and Tourers that an execution on a trail bike can seem destabilizing. After all, it’s a Harley, and it is just as entitled to its Custom Vehicle Operations preparation as the others. It seems the exercise was well-received, as it returns in 2025 with a new color scheme.
A CVO is first and foremost a flashy and shimmering paint job, of prestige and high finish. The Pan distinguishes itself with its "Carbon Blue" color and camouflage decoration. The twin is adorned with several carbon-like medallions. A small CVO motif is present on each saddlebag.
Mechanically speaking, the trail bike is a departure from its noble lineage. CVO models are entitled to a larger, thicker, more powerful engine than their standard counterparts; still the largest air-cooled engine available from Harley. This will not be the case for the Pan America. No higher displacement or power-boosted version will come to ennoble its mechanics. That said, with 150 horsepower under the hood, this trail bike is already copiously motorized.
Harley makes up for it with the addition of a complete luggage kit. With the Pan America CVO, there’s no need to look at a backpack or saddlebags. It leaves the garage already fully equipped, designed in partnership with SW-Motech. Its top case can hold 40 liters of gear. As for the saddlebags, they announce 45 liters on the left and 37 liters on the right – the exhaust pipe imposes a bit of a volume sacrifice. The entire ensemble, very trekking-oriented, is all aluminum.
The Pan-America is also loaded with various accessories. Harley adds a very large aluminum skid plate, triple-function auxiliary headlights (fog, high beam, and off-road lights), special saddles with an orange trim, an Up&Down shifter from the Screamin’ Eagle range, adaptive ride height, tubeless spoke wheels, an Adventure travel bag, a radiator protector, knee grips, an 11-inch windshield, a CNC-machined phone mount, an exhaust protector, and a premium cover badged CVO.
All this equipment has an influence on the balance: the CVO weighs forty kg more than the Pan America Special on which it is based. Thus, this trail bike is already equipped with semi-active suspension, a 17.3 cm color TFT screen, 5 Riding Modes + 4 programmable, and a host of riding aids: traction control, ABS, linked braking, anti-wheeling, and residual torque control – all reactive to the lean angle; tire pressure monitoring, and hill-hold assist.
The CVO was born in 1999 and has since been applied to almost all Harley-Davidson models. The 1250 Pan America joins this family of luxury, with dirt in its ears and deep pockets. The price tag obviously takes a significant jump, reaching the level of the most sporty maxi-trails of the moment (Multi 1000 XR or Multistrada V4 RS).
