Overview
When Aprilia brings the RX out of storage, it's not to go scratching the earth in competition. It's to remind the 125 enduro market that a motorcycle can have style before it even starts. The silhouette, tall with its 21-inch front wheel and knobby tires, immediately evokes large-displacement trial and cross bikes. At 3,549 euros, it's an aesthetic argument that weighs heavily in the balance for a young A1 license holder.

The question often comes up on forums: is the Aprilia RX 125 a two-stroke? The answer is no, at least since the emissions regulations have reshuffled the cards. The previous generation did indeed run on a 2T single-cylinder engine with plenty of punch. The 2020 version features a 124 cc four-stroke engine, with four valves per cylinder, a compression ratio of 12.5:1 and a maximum power speed of 10,500 rpm for 15 horsepower. It's not an engine that will intimidate a Beta RR 125 or a KTM EXC on a real single track, but it meets Euro 4 standards while maintaining reasonable fuel consumption. For those looking for a used Aprilia RX 125 from the 2018 or 2019 model years, the engine is largely the same.
The kinship with the SX 125, the supermotard version of the same family, is transparent. Same steel double cradle frame, same 41 mm inverted fork, same progressive-link hydraulic monoshock. What distinguishes the RX is a few decisive details: a 69-tooth rear sprocket against 62 on the SX, tires in 90/90-21 at the front and 120/80-18 at the rear, with sculptures adapted for off-road use. Ground clearance and suspension travel do the rest. At 905 mm of seat height for 120 kg fully fueled, the motorcycle remains accessible for an average build, even if rutted paths will quickly demand a certain piloting technique.

The braking deserves attention. Aprilia equipped the Aprilia RX 125 enduro with front ABS that integrates an anti-pitching function, technology directly inherited from the brand's Superbike machines. On a 125, it's a real added value for an audience still learning. The announced top speed is around 120 km/h, which places the RX in the upper middle of its category and is quite sufficient for the mixed road and path uses for which it is intended. The 7.5-liter tank offers correct autonomy for forest rides without logistical constraints.

What you need to understand about the Aprilia RX 125 2020 is its positioning. It doesn't play the same game as a Yamaha WR 125 designed for competition. It is aimed at the young rider who wants to ride off-road on weekends, progress on paths without being overwhelmed by a machine that is too demanding, and return to town without being ashamed of their tool. The Aprilia RX 125 technical specifications speak of a well-finished motorcycle, equipped with serious suspensions and electronics adapted to its use. Pure enduro purists will look elsewhere. The others will find here a balance between driving pleasure, refined looks and real accessibility, all wrapped in that Italian signature that still makes the difference in a 125 market where style counts as much as horsepower.
