Overview
Yamaha Motor Europe has just reignited the Yard Built project, which had been dormant for a few seasons. The idea? To take a production base, a XSR 900 GP in this case, and transform it without touching the frame, to prove that personalization can be simple and spectacular. This time, the tribute is clear and assumed: it targets Randy Mamola, this American rider as flamboyant as he is talented who competed in 500cc in the 80s. The reference is his 1987 YZR 500, a machine that gave him three victories and a vice-world champion title.

The result, named "Back to the Paddock," is an aesthetic success that hits the mark in retro style. The red, white and yellow livery is a classic Yamaha that hasn’t aged. It was entrusted to the brush of Robert Lammers, while Eddy Speelman took care of the stickers, skillfully replacing the logos of sponsors from the time with "Fasters Sons" markings. The American flag is positioned identically to Randy’s bike, a detail that makes purists smile. We add the Racer pack, with its engine guard and rear bracket, and above all an Akrapovic exhaust that sounds as good as it looks.
But beneath the vintage attire, beats the heart of a modern sportbike. The 890cc CP3 three-cylinder engine, unchanged, delivers its 119 horsepower and 93 Nm of torque, all in a proven chassis. With 200 kg all fueled up, a 41mm inverted fork and radial braking, the base is more than solid for sporty use. It’s far from a simple empty shell: it’s a real motorcycle, capable of enjoying itself on winding roads, even if the 14-liter tank reminds you that outings will be short.

Who is this machine for? The nostalgic collector, obviously, the one who experienced the Mamola vs Lawson duels. But also the rider who wants a unique neo-retro, ready to ride, that stands out from the crowd in an ocean of sometimes too tame customs. The real regret is that this Yard Built will probably remain a prototype, a styling exercise presented at the Wheels & Waves festival. Yamaha gives us a lesson in style, but not the possibility of buying an example. It’s both the strength and the frustration of this kind of exercise: we admire, we dream, but we don’t sign a check.
