Overview

Can a 321 cm³ motorcycle really have flair and bite, or is it just a beginner’s toy? Yamaha answers with the R3, a model that, far from simply existing, clearly displays its ambitions. Since its return after Euro5 homologation, this compact sportbike has gained two kilos but has lost nothing of its character. With a new price of around €6900, it positions itself as a benchmark in the A2 universe, facing competitors like the Kawasaki Ninja 400 or the KTM RC 390.

Yamaha R3

Under its fairing, reminiscent of the R1 and M1, is an inline twin cylinder of 321 cm³ that delivers 42 horsepower at 10750 rpm and 29.5 Nm of torque. These figures, stable over the years, ensure a nice liveliness without ever being intimidating. The announced top speed flirts with 170 km/h, a credible figure for a machine that knows how to be playful in the mid-range. The steel diamond frame, combined with the engine as a rigidity element, offers a reassuring feel. The braking, with its single discs and ABS, does the job without pretension, but it is at the level of the suspension that Yamaha played the sporty card: an inverted KYB 37 mm fork replaces the old straight fork, promising more precision and firmness on corner entry. It’s a shame it’s not adjustable, but at this price, it’s hard to blame it.

This Yamaha R3 is for whom? Clearly for the young license holder or the motorcyclist looking for an accessible and stylish sportbike, without the hassles and cost of a large displacement. Its low handlebars, redesigned tank, and 780 mm seat encourage an engaged position, but remain fairly supple for daily commutes. The LCD dashboard, inspired by the R1, displays the essentials clearly: revs, speed, gear. With a 14-liter tank and consumption around 4L/100 km, it can also play the card of a touring bike over short distances.

On the used market, previous versions, such as the Yamaha R3 2020 or 2021, often represent an excellent value for money for those who want to get started in sportbikes without breaking the bank. Whether in black or other colors, its sharp design does not go unnoticed. But be warned, even though it excels in agility and fun, it will never be an R6. It lacks ultimate bite and advanced settings for pure track use. It is an entry-level sportbike, clever and well-finished, which bridges the gap between learning and thrills. An intelligent choice for those who want to grow in the saddle without sacrificing style and riding pleasure.
