Overview

With the arrival of the F 450 GS, things had to quickly evolve within the Bavarian manufacturer’s entry-level machines. The G 310 R may well be at the end of its run, with a possible 450 in the pipeline.

But let’s speculate about the future. Let’s look at the present with BMW’s smallest roadster, which was restyled in 2021. Half-heartedly, perhaps, but enough to notice its new face. The G 310 R / G 310 GS duo has allowed the brand to open its audience to a more modest clientele. It’s primarily an opportunity to place the Bavarian badge on motorcycles for emerging markets. Naturally, that’s where the Eldorado lies. While Euro 5 imposed some modifications, they are noticeable on the roadster more than on the trail bike.

Indeed, the GS’s physique hasn’t changed a hair. Whereas the G 310 R goes further. Why not take advantage of these refresh moments to change its appearance?! A relentless desire to resemble the larger roadsters in the range led the surgeon’s knife to its face. More aggressive, more angular, the headlight assembly and its fairing undeniably imitate the face of the S 1000 R. The daytime running light signature links all the R models in the range, including the F 900 R and R 1250 R. All lighting benefits from the switch to LEDs. More modern, but not overly so. The instrumentation remains an LCD model, whereas a TFT screen was expected to replicate the Duke 390. Still hesitant the market? It’s true that only the Katoche is equipped with it in its category.

With these new side panels intervening between the radiator ducts and the new tank, the G 310 R looks more serious; or more robust. Beneath, the mechanics haven’t really changed but have been reworked for Euro 5. Installed upside down in the frame (intake is from the front), the 313 cm³ single-cylinder engine is cleaner, retains its same power values – 34 horsepower and 3 mkg – and receives a few minor modifications. First of all, an anti-backlash clutch. We don’t really have to fear a slap in the face at this level of power, but you never know; coming in 12th gear one rainy night… The gain will be more noticeable on the left hand, where the clutch requires less effort.

The riding section also gains a Ride-by-Wire throttle, adjustable 4-position brake and clutch levers, and a system that increases the idle speed at startup, to prevent stalling.

The BMW G 310 R is manufactured in India, by the very important TVS Motor Company. Low cost, but not cheap. This roadster is equipped with a silhouette with character, an inverted 41 mm fork, a Bybre front brake caliper (a Brembo sub-brand) with 4 pistons, and ABS. The frame is made of steel tubes and the swingarm is made of aluminum. The brand announces a top speed of 143 km/h and a consumption of barely more than 3 liters per 100.

A little “titanium gray” paint on the engine casings and a few parts, new colors, a slight increase in price, and the G 310 R quietly returns to the road. Nothing changed on the chassis, suspension or brakes; except for the wheelbase, which shortens by 6 mm. With this more dynamic look and this update, the smallest of BMW’s roadsters secures its presence with the manufacturer. It won’t be its best seller, but it allows you to start on a BMW roadster without immediately starting with a 900.
