Overview
Can you really play in the sportbike league with 39 horsepower and 296 cc? Kawasaki has been a firm believer since the launch of its Ninja 300, and this 2016 KRT Performance edition pushes things one notch further. There's no question of rivaling a YZF-R3 on raw power or challenging an RC 390 through fast corners. The aim lies elsewhere. It's about selling an accessible dream, wrapping a well-mannered little twin in packaging that smells of the paddock. And on that front, Kawasaki knows what it's doing.

The 296 cc parallel twin produces 39 hp at 11,000 rpm and 27.5 Nm of torque at 10,000 rpm. Modest figures that you have to chase high up the rev range, but the four-valve-per-cylinder engine loves to rev and comes alive once past 7,000 rpm. The real novelty in this Performance pack is the carbon-fiber Akrapovic silencer delivered with the bike. The Slovenian exhaust weighs 1.6 kg versus 4.4 kg for the stock system — nearly three kilos shed. The power gain is purely symbolic, half a horsepower at most, but the sound changes dramatically. The little twin snarls with more conviction, and it's precisely this kind of detail that turns a ride into genuine pleasure. On the scales, the Ninja 300 KRT Performance tips in at 171 kg wet. That's contained, easy to maneuver, and perfect for an A2 license or a no-stress return to riding.
On the presentation side, Kawasaki dresses its small sportbike in WorldSBK team colors. The green and black Jonathan Rea replica livery pops in the light, the body-colored seat cowl slims the silhouette, and the double-curvature smoked screen offers a minimum of wind protection. Rim tape and a gel tank pad complete the picture. Nothing revolutionary on the technical front, but the package exudes a visual coherence that neither the Honda CBR300R nor the Yamaha R3 offer in their standard versions. Kawasaki is selling an image here, and it's a polished one.
The tubular steel frame rides on a 37 mm telescopic fork and a rear monoshock, both non-adjustable. Braking relies on two petal discs — a 290 mm unit up front with a two-piston caliper and a 220 mm disc at the rear. It's adequate without being remarkable. The 785 mm seat height allows confident contact with the ground, and the 17-liter tank promises comfortable range for a compact sportbike. Top speed plateaus at 160 km/h, which is more than enough for fun on the road and even for clipping curbs at a beginner track day.
At €6,369 with the Akrapovic in the box, the Ninja 300 KRT Performance sits above a base R3 but justifies the premium with its equipment. It doesn't claim to be a track weapon. It plays the emotion-on-a-budget card — riding pleasure without consequence, a racing look for those who want to wear Superbike colors without mortgaging their apartment. For a young A2 rider or an urban motorcyclist looking for a light, rewarding everyday machine, it's a solid choice. Provided you accept that the show is more in the mirror than on the stopwatch.
