Overview
It's something of a curse to be the eternal runner-up. In the shadow of the luminous RS, does the Triumph Street Triple R appear to be a poor relation? With a difference of nearly 3000 euros, the question is worth asking. But straddling the bike quickly reveals that Triumph hasn't cobbled together a cut-price roadster. This 2024 model, which can be seen as the culmination of the 765 generation launched in 2020, remains a machine of absolute coherence, tailored for those who want sporty performance without excess.

The three-cylinder engine, that old accomplice, has received intensive care. Engineers have reworked the internals to gain two horsepower, bringing the total to 120, and above all to boost torque at mid-range. The result? A mechanical package that has nothing in common with the previous Street Triple R 675, which was rougher and less generous. It exudes health, delivering its power with exemplary progressivity, aided by a precise gearbox and a standard bi-directional quickshifter. It's far from the brutal character of a Japanese roadster; here, elegance and efficiency take precedence. The technical specifications of this Triumph Street Triple R 765 speak for themselves: it's an engine that has matured, gained versatility without losing its soul.
The chassis, however, hasn't changed. And that's a good thing. The perimeter aluminum frame and Showa suspension offer a perfect balance between road comfort and sporty engagement. Yes, the fork isn't as sharp as the gold cartridge of the RS, and the Brembo M4.32 brakes, while powerful, lack the ultimate bite of Stylema calipers. But let's admit it: for 99% of road use, this kit is more than sufficient, even ideal. It forgives, it communicates, it inspires immediate confidence. This is the great strength of the R: it fades into the background to let pure pleasure take over. The slightly readjusted riding position, with a slightly wider handlebar, confirms this status as a universal roadster, equally comfortable in the city as on mountain passes.

So, where are the real sacrifices? They are concentrated in two areas. The first is the instrumentation. Triumph persists with this hybrid TFT/LCD combination that pales in comparison to the full-screen displays of the competition. On a machine at this price, it stings a little. The second is the systematic optionality. The Bluetooth connectivity module, present on much cheaper motorcycles, remains an extra. These economic choices are the only shadows on the picture.
Ultimately, who should target this Triumph Street Triple R? The rider who seeks the quintessence of the sporty roadster without the fine-tuned settings and prohibitive price of the RS. It's the motorcycle of quiet expertise, one that offers 95% of the sensations of its big sister for a much more contained budget. Faced with a Yamaha MT-09 that is still a bit raw or a KTM 790 Duke that is more aggressive, the Street Triple R plays the card of sophistication and perfect balance. Its price, around 10,500 euros, is not cheap, but it buys a driving experience honed to perfection. Trying the Triumph Street Triple R often means buying it. The competition knows this well, and continues to sweat blood and tears to catch up with this English bike, which, year after year, from the Street Triple R 2012 to this 2024, gives a lesson in consistency and character.
