Overview
Does a roadster lose its soul when it gains efficiency? That was the question that plagued purists when Triumph unveiled this redesign of the Street Triple R in 2013. The answer, after twisting the throttle, is a categorical no. The soul is still there, but it now resides in a machine honed like a scalpel. Losing six kilograms on an already lightweight base is the kind of regimen that transforms a talented athlete into an Olympic champion. It's not just a number; it's an immediate sensation when you lift the beast from its stand.

The most striking, and most controversial, change is the abandonment of the two silencers under the seat. The end of that instantly recognizable rear signature. In its place, a single low-slung exhaust and a streamlined rear end. Some saw this as sacrilege; I see it as an inexorable logic. This reduction in centralized mass and lowering of the center of gravity transforms the already prodigious agility of the previous version. The new, lighter, and stiffer frame, combined with a slightly steeper rake angle, means the bike doesn't lean, it throws itself into the corner. This is a major evolution for the model, visible on all the technical specifications of the Triumph Street Triple R up to the 765.
And at the heart of this refined machine beats that mythical 675 cm3 triple. 106 horsepower at nearly 12,000 rpm, a charming torque curve, and that raspy sound that sends shivers down your spine. It doesn't need more power; it needs this slimmer platform to fully express itself. The R version justifies its price with serious equipment: fully adjustable Kayaba suspension, 4-piston radial Brembo brakes, and switchable ABS. Faced with a somewhat raw Yamaha MT-09 or a more placid Kawasaki Z900, the 2016 Triumph Street Triple R stakes its claim: the precision weapon for pure pleasure.

Who is it for? For the demanding rider who seeks the perfect connection, the tool that responds without delay. It’s a motorcycle that forgives few trajectory errors because it executes them with such promptness. The touring rider will appreciate its versatility, but it delivers its best on winding roads. The riding position is committed, the 82 cm seat isn't the lowest, but all of this contributes to that feeling of total control.
So, has this 2016 Triumph Street Triple R betrayed its heritage? Absolutely not. It has modernized it, rationalized it, and made it an even more formidable machine. It traded an iconic look for tenfold efficiency. On the used market today, it represents a fantastic entry point into the world of high-end triple roadsters, well before the arrival of the Triumph Street Triple R 765. It’s a lesson in evolution: sometimes, to remain faithful to its spirit, you have to know how to change your skin.
