Overview
So here it is: in 2008, Suzuki decided to extend the life of its Intruder M1800, presenting us with the R2. It's a gamble, because on paper, very little has changed. We find the same 54° V-twin, this behemoth of 1783 cm3 which remains, to this day, one of the largest production twins. The figures are still there, almost intimidating: 125 horsepower arriving at 6200 rpm, and especially this torque of 158.9 Nm which starts at 3200 rpm, a real locomotive pull. The steel double cradle frame, the shaft drive, the 43 mm inverted fork and the enormous 240 mm rear tire, all of this is retained. The weight too, with 347 kg fully fueled, a figure that speaks clearly when you have to move it to the parking area.

But Suzuki understood that when it comes to custom bikes, the head counts as much as the heart. The Intruder M1800R2 is therefore distinguished by a new, more streamlined oblong headlight, replacing the massive block of the first version. This change is subtle but significant. One sees an obvious influence, a nod to the Harley-Davidson V-Rod, or even to certain automotive lines. It’s less brutal, perhaps more elegant, but the intention remains the same: to provoke. With its aggressive angled exhausts, radial brake calipers and this low silhouette on its monster tire, the bike is not discreet. It is a custom-dragster, a hybrid that looks as much to the boulevard as to the track.
Compared to its competitors of the time, such as the Harley-Davidson V-Rod or certain Yamaha Majestys, the Intruder M1800R2 plays on a different register. It is not purely American, it is more technical, more "engineered". Its front dual disc braking system with 310 mm diameter and radial caliper is an unusually sporty level for this segment. But this sophistication comes at a price, and not just financially. At 14,299 euros, it places itself in the high end. And its weight of 347 kg, combined with a seat height of only 705 mm, makes the bike very stable but not very agile at low speed. City maneuvers require anticipation, and tight turns are not its natural playground. The announced top speed of 220 km/h is accessible, but the machine is more comfortable on long, straight roads where its crushing torque can be expressed.
This Suzuki Intruder M1800R2 is therefore aimed at a particular rider. Not a beginner, obviously, nor a touring rider looking for lightness. It targets the enthusiast of powerful customs, the one who wants an exceptionally large engine and an imposing physical presence, without completely sacrificing mechanical performance. It is a bold compromise between the radical aesthetics of the custom and certain technologies from the sporting world. A compromise that, despite its price and its weight, retains a unique aura. It is not for everyone, but for those seeking a characterful machine, with a reworked visual identity and this exceptional engine, it remains a disturbing and seductive proposition.
