Overview
When the Church meets the Bavarian boxer, the result is something quite unique in the history of two-wheelers. Imagine this 1802 cc flat-twin, its 163 Nm of torque available from 3,000 rpm, its immaculate pearlescent white livery adorned with the Vatican coat of arms, presented before the Holy Father to receive his blessing and signature. BMW Motorrad CEO Markus Flasch and Michael Sommer, head of BMW Motorrad Germany, had made the trip to Rome on September 3, 2025, to present this very special R 18 Transcontinental to Pope Leo XIV.

Behind this unusual initiative are Thomas Draxler, founder of JESUS-BIKER, and dealer Witzel, responsible for the specific finishing touches on this machine. BMW Motorrad Deutschland provided the base, Witzel elevated it with this pearlescent paint and pontifical symbols. The visual result stands in sharp contrast to the dark tones usually found in the catalogue: 427 kg fully loaded of Germanic Grand Tourer dressed like a First Communion procession.
But this motorcycle was never meant to stay in a showroom. Its journey began on August 31, 2025, with a "Peace Ride" departing from Sennfeld, passing through Schaafheim, Altötting, and Verona before reaching Rome, accompanied by religious celebrations along the way. A journey befitting the machine: the R 18 Transcontinental, with its 24-liter tank and shaft drive, is built to eat up the miles without breaking a sweat, even if its 91 horsepower at 4,750 rpm and top speed capped at 180 km/h place it firmly on the side of serene touring rather than outright sportiness.

After an exhibition at BMW Welt in Munich from September 15 to October 7, 2025, the motorcycle passed into the hands of Missio Austria via Sotheby's on October 18 in Munich. The hammer fell at €130,000, a sum that will go entirely toward funding child welfare projects in Madagascar under the auspices of the Catholic charitable organization. For a motorcycle whose seat height sits at 740 mm, accessible to most riders, this price clearly transcends any ordinary commercial logic. What you are buying here is not 91 horsepower on a steel double-cradle frame with 49 mm forks; you are acquiring a symbolic object, an artifact at the intersection of mechanics and the spiritual, whose value owes as much to the papal signature as to the 1802 cc purring beneath the tank.

BMW Motorrad has always cultivated a taste for special editions laden with meaning. This one takes on a different dimension: not a tribute to a rider, nor a brand anniversary celebration, but a machine conceived to serve a cause. The Bavarian boxer in the service of Malagasy children, blessed by the Pope, sold at Sotheby's. In the history of motorcycling, remarkable things do happen.
