Overview
At €40,000, what exactly are we entitled to expect? A motorcycle, or a rolling manifesto of American craftsmanship? With this CVO Limited, Harley-Davidson answers without ambiguity: both, Captain. We are here in the realm of declaration, far beyond a simple vehicle. Take an Electra Glide, already queen of the touring bikes, and entrust it to the Custom Vehicle Operations department. The result is a machine where every bolt seems gold-plated, where every piece of equipment aims to transform the road into an air-conditioned lounge. At 433 kilograms with full tanks, it imposes its size and aura. It is the culmination of a philosophy: travel as a total experience, where brute performance gives way to absolute comfort and stage presence.

The heart of the beast is, of course, the large 1801 cm3 water-cooled V-Twin. With 154.9 Nm of torque available from 3750 rpm, we are no longer talking about acceleration, but about a surge of traction. The power, announced at 98 horsepower, is almost a detail; what’s important is this sovereign propulsion, this rumble transformed into a growl under the throttle. It devours long straight stretches effortlessly, with cruise control activated, heated grips in action. The six-speed gearbox is precise, the belt drive silent. We don’t seek the 170 km/h top speed, we savor the fact of arriving there in a remarkable acoustic and thermal insulation shield.
But the real subject, with a CVO, is the equipment. The list reads like an inventory à la Prévert: dashboard with Boom! 6.5 GT touchscreen display integrating a 3D GPS, high-power audio system, tire pressure monitoring system, transponder key, Daymaker LED lights, air suspension, and even a separately controllable heated seat for the rider and passenger. The saddlebags and top case are integrated into the design, and the finish reaches new heights, with hand-painted Thunderblade finishes. Compared to a Gold Wing or a BMW K 1600 GTL, more focused on technological efficiency, Harley bets everything on emotion and customization. It’s a different, almost anachronistic, but terribly consistent approach.
For whom? Clearly not for a beginner, nor for the hurried motorcyclist. This machine is for the demanding globetrotter for whom the journey begins at the time of purchase. It is the object of a fantasy, the reward for a career, the Grail for the lover of chrome and Milwaukee tradition. Its weight and size make it unwieldy in the city, but that is not its role. It is made for wide-open spaces, road trips where distances are counted in days, not kilometers.
So, is it justified? At this price, you can afford a sports car and a touring motorcycle. But the question is poorly asked. The CVO 1800 Limited is not a rational motorcycle. It is a symbol, an experience, a piece of the American dream materialized in the form of a twin-cylinder engine. It is flawed by its weight, its exorbitant price, and its assumed consumption, but it seduces by its unique character, its unparalleled comfort, and that aura that turns every head. In short, if you have to justify its purchase, it’s probably not your audience. Its audience, for its part, has already signed the check.
