Overview

With the R 18 Transcontinental, BMW Motorrad adds a “Grand American Tourer” to the R 18 family. Like the other R18 models, the Transcontinental combines the power of the “Big Boxer” with a classic chassis concept based on the traditional BMW helix-branded models, exclusive equipment, and an elegant design. Euro5+ compliance was coupled with an increase in peak torque. With an additional 5 Nm, the twin’s muscle reaches 16.6 kg-m (163 Nm) at the same engine speed of 3,000 rpm.

This makes the R 18 Transcontinental ideal for touring and long distances in an American-style riding style - both solo and with a passenger and luggage. It is distinguished by a multitude of specific equipment items such as a front fairing with a tall windshield, air deflectors, and flaps. But also a cockpit with four round analog dials and a 10.25-inch color TFT screen, additional headlights, a Marshall audio system, engine protection bars, rigid cases, a top case, a heated seat, chrome trim, and an engine painted in Silver metallic.

The heart of the R 18 Transcontinental is undoubtedly their flat-twin engine specifically designed to equip the R 18 family. As impressive as it is in size as it is in technology, the flat-twin, nicknamed “Big Boxer,” is in line with the tradition of air-cooled boxer engines that, since the beginnings of motorcycle production by BMW Motorrad in 1923, are characterized by a unique riding experience. Equipped with the largest displacement ever achieved on a BMW model motorcycle (1,802 cm3), the boxer twin develops 91 hp (67 kW) at an engine speed of 4,750 rpm and can instantly deliver a torque greater than 150 Nm in the range between 2,000 and 4,000 rpm.

The R 18 Transcontinental’s chassis is characterized primarily by a steel double-tube frame. With this design, BMW perpetuates a long tradition of the brand. Particular care has been paid to every detail, as evidenced by the welds between the steel tubes and the molded or forged parts. As on the legendary BMW R 5, the swingarm encloses the final drive with bolted fixings, in a perfectly authentic style.

The suspension elements of the BMW Transcontinental deliberately forgo any possibility of adjustment by the rider. Instead, the telescopic fork and the cantilever suspension strut mounted directly on the swingarm, with a damping system based on stroke and automatically adjustable preload, ensure extremely precise wheel guidance and increased comfort. In order to achieve the most balanced road handling possible, even when touring as a duo with luggage, the rear suspension strut is also equipped with automatic load compensation. As on the legendary BMW R 5, the tubes of the telescopic fork are faired. These tubes have a diameter of 49 mm, the front and rear stroke, being identical, is 120 mm. Braking is ensured by a double-disc brake at the front and a single-disc brake at the rear with fixed four-piston calipers coupled with BMW Motorrad’s Integral ABSFull.

The BMW R 18 Transcontinental is equipped as standard with the Dynamic Cruise Control (DCC) electronic speed regulator. The latter automatically regulates the driving speed defined by the rider. “Dynamic” means that the preset speed is maintained constant even when descending. The Active Cruise Control (ACC) active speed regulator, available as an option, offers maximum comfort by automatically regulating the speed defined by the rider and the distance from the preceding vehicle. Thanks to radar sensors integrated into the front fairing, the motorcycle automatically accelerates or decelerates, thanks to the new Integral ABSFull system as standard, to adapt its speed to the driving situation. ACC also ensures particularly safe behavior when cornering. If necessary, the “cornering control system” automatically reduces speed, giving the rider the right speed for a comfortable lean angle and securing.

In the purest BMW Motorrad style, the Transcontinental has mid-mounted footpegs, nicknamed “mid mounted footpeg,” for relaxed riding. This footpeg position behind the cylinders, classic at BMW, offers a comfortable seat while allowing the rider to maintain optimal control of the motorcycle at all times.

The R 18 Transcontinental is equipped as standard with a particularly welcoming heated seat that ensures riding comfort over long distances, even with a passenger. It is equipped as standard with footboards.

The cockpit, specially designed for the new R 18 Transcontinental, with four round analog dials and a 10.25-inch color TFT screen, blends harmoniously into the classic style. Marked with the iconic “BERLIN BUILT” lettering, it reprises the classic style of the Transcontinental, and is also equipped with a perfectly legible color TFT screen offering a maximum of functions and information. A new "Favorites" button allows faster access to certain functions, without having to go through the dashboard menu and the Multicontroller.

The R 18 Transcontinental has three standard riding modes: Rain, Roll, and Rock, to adapt the riding to the rider’s preferences, which is a rarity in this segment. The standard equipment also includes the Automatic Stability Control (ASC) anti-wheelie system, which ensures a high level of safety during riding, the engine torque control (MSR) technology, and a reverse gear (standard since the 2023 model year). In addition to other options, the Hill Start Control function facilitates starts on inclines.

This Transcontinental positions itself as a luxurious Tourer with its characteristic profile, which seamlessly integrates the front fairing, cases, and top case. It skillfully translates the iconic style of former “Tourers” and “Cruisers” to our time. The streamlined design, which was shaped by the greatest classics of the brand, is expressed through numerous details. Most of the style and functional elements characteristic of the two models, such as the double-tube frame, the 24-liter teardrop-shaped tank, the exposed final drive shaft, or even the paint adorned with double white lisées (available as an option) recall the legendary BMW boxer motorcycles. Their chassis is also a splendid return to the roots. With a two-arm swingarm and a cantilever shock absorber, the frame rigid concept of the BMW R 5 has been perfectly translated to modern times.

Equipped with Marshall audio systems, the R 18 Transcontinental offers an intense sound experience. As standard, it is already equipped with an audio system developed in collaboration with the British manufacturer consisting of two speakers integrated into the cockpit area. Black protective grilles with white Marshall lettering complement the classic look. Marshall Gold Series Stage 1 and Stage 2 audio systems are available as an option to offer an even more intense listening pleasure. Up to 4 speakers and 2 subwoofers for a total power of 280 watts offer unparalleled sound quality and “good vibrations.” For 60 years, Marshall, originating from Hanwell, London, and now based in Bletchley, Milton Keynes (UK), has produced legendary guitar amplifiers used by the best musicians in the world. Since 2012, they have expanded their audio quality to award-winning headphones and active speakers designed for music lovers.

The BMW Motorrad original accessories range offers a multitude of customization possibilities to adapt the R 18 Transcontinental to all styles. The milled aluminum parts collections, well known to owners of R 18 and R 18 Classic, created in collaboration with Roland Sands Design, are also available for the R 18 Transcontinental. However, for the two latest members of the Heritage family, BMW Motorrad offers a series of exclusive parts, of high manufacturing quality and gathered under the code name “Option 719” such as the Galaxy Dust metallic paint with countless reflections.
