Overview
Who said a Japanese custom motorcycle had to necessarily scream with a dragster exhaust and blind chrome? In 2011, the Suzuki Intruder C800, for its part, prefers to whisper. After a short absence to comply with regulations, this veteran returns with the same philosophy: understated elegance and quiet reliability. It’s far from aggressive bling-bling. Here, the lines are long, fluid, with those characteristic skirts that dress the wheels. The 45° V-twin, with 805 cm3, is not a wildcat. With 53 horsepower delivered without haste at 6000 rpm and a meaty torque of 67.7 Nm available from low revs, it prioritizes suppleness and progressiveness. An engine that knows how to fade into the background, perfect for relaxed road use.

However, you have to deal with certain technical choices that are a bit dated. The rear drum brake, on a machine costing €8700, is questionable in 2011, even if the double-piston caliper at the front does its job correctly. The real black spot is its weight. At 277 kilograms with a full tank, the beast is heavy, and this 130-width front tire doesn’t help with low-speed maneuvers or in parking lots. It requires anticipation. But once underway, this mass is forgotten, carried by reassuring stability and the smoothness inherent in driveshaft transmissions. The seat at 70 cm from the ground is a major asset, opening up the practice to a very large majority of riders, especially those looking for a relaxed position, feet forward on the long footpegs.
Compared to a Harley-Davidson Sportster 883 of the time, more vibrant and temperamental, the Suzuki Intruder C800 plays the card of civility and ease. Its injected and water-cooled engine starts on the first try, warms up little, and requires no special maintenance. This is the strength of Japanese customs: they run every day without incident. The 15.5-liter tank promises beautiful ranges, and the look, especially in its more discreet full black version, is appealing for its lack of pretension. The second-hand market is full of them today, often well maintained, offering a solid entry into the world of custom motorcycles.
So, who is this roadster for? For those who want the custom style without the mechanical hassles, for the traveler who prioritizes comfort and regularity over brute performance. It’s not a machine for thrill-seekers or for showing off at the bar. It’s a faithful road companion, a little cumbersome, but incredibly reliable and enjoyable to ride daily. Its essence is summed up in its name: it intrudes, it blends into your life without making a fuss. A test ride on the Suzuki Intruder C800 is enough to understand; it’s a motorcycle that is lived more than it is demonstrated, an elegant silhouette that crosses the years without aging.
