Overview

Forty years of lineage condensed into a livery — that is the bet MV Agusta repeats with almost ritual regularity. The America saga dates back to 1975 and the 750 S, and each subsequent generation has carried that badge in turn, from the Brutale 750 of 2005 to the Brutale 800 RR. For 2019, it is the Dragster that dons the star-spangled colors, in a limited series of 200 numbered units, each delivered with its certificate of authenticity.

MV Agusta 800 DRAGSTER America

The presentation work is meticulous. The wheels echo the American tricolor in their details — red hubs, white rim, blue spoke ends. The seat is red, stitched with gold thread. The tank bears a star-studded sticker that directly references the original 750 S. The front fender and radiator scoops receive a gloss finish, with a discreet "America Special Edition" engraved into the material. A plate bolted to the fork crown reminds the rider of the serial number, confirming that they own something genuinely rare. MV Agusta knows how to dress its special editions — that has always been a hallmark of the house.

Beneath the bodywork, the 798 cc triple-cylinder engine remains unchanged in character. It produces 140 horsepower at 12,300 rpm and 87 Nm at 10,100 rpm — figures that place the Dragster among premium sporting roadsters, alongside the Triumph Speed Triple 1050 and the Ducati Monster 1200. Specific output is high, the engine willingly revs, and the six-speed chain-driven gearbox suits this spirited character well. The tubular steel trellis frame, reinforced by aluminum plates, carries the whole assembly to a dry weight of 168 kg, which remains a serious argument against heavier rivals. A seat height of 811 mm and a 16-liter tank make this a motorcycle built for an experienced rider, not a first-timer.

The 43 mm inverted Marzocchi forks up front and the rear monoshock both offer 125 mm of travel. Brembo brakes handle stopping duty with two 320 mm discs and four-piston radial calipers. The claimed top speed reaches 244 km/h, though that is not where the appeal of this machine lies. What matters most is the perceived quality, the assembly in Varese, and a triple-cylinder engine with the rare quality of sounding right at any rpm.

The question of price is unavoidable. In France, the MV Agusta 800 Dragster America 2019 is offered at €19,890. That is the price of an exceptional, limited-production motorcycle, not that of a versatile roadster. For the same budget, a Kawasaki Z900 RS or a Yamaha MT-09 SP leave change in your pocket, along with guarantees of everyday usability that the Dragster makes no claim to offer. This America is aimed at a collector who rides, at someone who sees ownership of a serial number as a valid argument in itself. It is a motorcycle of pure passion, impervious to the logic of value for money, and MV Agusta makes no attempt to hide that. In this segment, the Italian brand has virtually no direct competitor. It has been playing in its own category for fifty years.
