Overview
Forty-four years. That’s how long it took Harley-Davidson to dare replace a legend, the mythical XR 750, undisputed queen of the dirt ovals. So, when the Screamin’ Eagle team unveils the XG 750 R, it’s not a simple evolution, it’s a thunderclap in the very traditional microcosm of American flat track. The announcement is clear: the era of the large air-cooled twin is over, make way for modernity.

The heart of this revolution beats with the Revolution X engine, a 60° V-twin liquid-cooled and fuel-injected, inherited from the Street 750 but deeply reworked. With its 750 cc and 110 horsepower tapped at 10,000 rpm, it sends an unequivocal message to the competition, often armed with more exotic engines. It’s no longer the torquey pachyderm of yesteryear, but a faster engine, ready to howl down the straights of the Mile. The partnership with Vance & Hines, a recognized specialist, was crucial to extract this power and insert it into a dedicated competition frame.
On the track, the mission was entrusted to a young wolf, Davis Fisher, reigning champion of the GNC2 category. Giving him the keys to the Harley-Davidson XG 750 R against the veterans mounted on XR 750s was a bold gamble. A gamble on the future, but also a realistic development strategy: let the rookie hone the beast, while champion Brad Baker continued to rack up results with the old glory. This 2016 AMA Pro Flat Track season was therefore a gigantic open-air test bench.
So, a machine to conquer or a simple laboratory prototype? The first laps at Springfield showed a certain potential, but also the road ahead. The transition between ancestral mechanical philosophy and the demands of modern competition does not happen in a snap of the fingers. This Harley-Davidson XG 750 R, strictly reserved for racing and therefore unavailable at dealerships, above all symbolizes a change in mindset at the Milwaukee manufacturer. It proves that, finally, pure performance can sometimes take precedence over traditional purism, even on the most sacred ground.
For the amateur rider or the average buyer, this motorcycle does not exist. But for anyone interested in the evolution of Harley-Davidson, it is a fascinating signal. It tells a story where heritage must compose with technical pressure, where an engine designed for the city transforms into a racing weapon. The goal was clear: prepare for the post-XR era. The result, still in gestation in 2016, laid the foundations for a new era, perhaps less loud in decibels, but much more deafening on a symbolic level.
