Overview

Who would have thought that one day you could unleash a 140-horsepower Italian triple without ever touching the clutch lever? The 2024 MV Agusta Dragster 800 RR SCS lays a radical proposition on the table in the premium sport naked segment. Its killer argument comes down to three letters: SCS, for Smart Clutch System. An automatic centrifugal clutch developed by American specialist Rekluse, which frees the rider from any lever action when pulling away and coming to a stop. Gear changes remain handled by the left foot via a third-generation up-and-down quickshifter. The added cost of this technology is around 500 euros, for a virtually negligible weight penalty: 36 grams. The result is blistering launches that a conventional clutch makes very hard to replicate, especially with an engine as eager as this 798 cc unit that peaks at 12,300 rpm to deliver its full power.

The engine, indeed, remains the crown jewel. This inline three-cylinder with 79 x 54.3 mm bore and stroke, a 13.3:1 compression ratio, produces 140 hp and 87 Nm at 10,250 rpm. Figures that put the MV Agusta Dragster 800 RR SCS in direct competition with the Triumph Street Triple RS or the Yamaha MT-09 SP, even though the Italian plays in an entirely different price league at 22,999 euros. For that money, Varese doesn't cut corners: the electronic management has been thoroughly overhauled, with an inertial measurement unit (IMU) feeding a cornering ABS, a refined traction control system, and a recalibrated anti-wheelie function. A cruise control rounds out the arsenal, disengaged by a negative twist of the throttle grip, whose feel has been reworked for this model year.

On the style front, the Dragster continues to steal every glance. The 2024 model year ditched the old tangential-spoke wheels in favor of rims borrowed from the Superveloce, while the carbon rear wheel cover draws direct inspiration from the 1000 Rush. The 5.5-inch TFT display sits proudly at the center of the cockpit, and the headlight now integrates adaptive cornering illumination. Visually, this machine remains a concentrated dose of aggression, compact and purposeful, light-years away from the consensus-driven design of a Japanese rival.

The chassis package means serious track-day business. The tubular steel trellis frame bolted to aluminum plates houses a fully adjustable 43 mm Marzocchi inverted fork and an equally configurable Sachs shock, mounted on a single-sided swingarm. Braking duties fall to Brembo M4.32 monoblock radial-mount calipers biting two 320 mm discs up front, complemented by a 220 mm disc and a two-piston caliper at the rear. The rear circuit benefits from slightly increased pressure on this 2024 version. At 175 kg dry, shod with 120/70 and 200/50 tires, the beast promises fearsome agility for a machine capable of reaching 244 km/h.

Then comes the question of positioning. At nearly 23,000 euros, the 2024 MV Agusta Dragster 800 RR SCS targets a discerning audience seeking mechanical exclusivity as much as outright performance. The seat perched at 845 mm and the 16.5-liter tank are reminders that this machine wasn't built to devour motorways, but to reign over twisty roads and Sunday rides where every corner counts. Against a Brutale that has become almost tame, the Dragster remains the choice for those who want a characterful Italian, temperamental and magnificent, with that extra dash of technological soul that the SCS clutch represents.
