Overview

Imagine an Italian triple that launches off the line without your left hand ever touching the clutch lever. No magic trick, no German-style automated dual-clutch. Just a centrifugal system called the Smart Clutch System, developed by American specialist Rekluse, and grafted by MV Agusta onto its Dragster 800 RR SCS. The principle is simple: the clutch engages and disengages on its own based on engine speed, leaving the rider to shift gears with their foot via the quickshifter. All for 36 grams of extra weight on the scales and roughly 500 euros added to the price tag. On paper, it's an elegant solution for nailing blistering launches without frying the clutch plates — an exercise that even experienced riders botch every other time with a conventional clutch.

MV Agusta Dragster 800 RR SCS

Behind this mechanical party trick, the 2022 MV Agusta Dragster 800 RR SCS remains a thoroughbred Italian naked, built around the 798 cc inline triple found across the entire 800 range from Varese. Engineers refined it with reworked internal components, a 13.3:1 compression ratio, and a bore/stroke of 79 x 54.3 mm that betrays a highly strung character. The result: 140 horsepower at 12,300 rpm and 87 Nm of torque at 10,250 rpm. This is not the most tractable engine on the market. You have to wring its neck to extract the good stuff, but when the redline approaches, the sound of that raspy triple alone justifies the price of admission. Against a Triumph Street Triple RS or a Yamaha MT-09 SP, the Dragster clearly plays the card of mechanical exclusivity and a high-revving temperament.

On the chassis side, the ALS tubular steel trellis frame houses a fully adjustable 43 mm Marzocchi inverted fork and a Sachs shock adjustable for rebound, compression, and preload. The package is serious, calibrated for sporty use without being punishing. The Brembo brakes, with four-piston radial calipers biting 320 mm floating discs up front, inspire immediate confidence. The contained dry weight of 175 kg, paired with a short 1,400 mm wheelbase, yields a machine that's sharp on turn-in, almost nervous through tight sequences. The seat perched at 845 mm and the 16.5-litre tank are reminders, however, that this bike wasn't designed to gobble up motorway miles, especially since the claimed fuel consumption of 5.9 litres per 100 km limits theoretical range to under 280 kilometres.

MV Agusta Dragster 800 RR SCS

The electronics have taken a notable leap forward compared to the early generations. An inertial measurement unit, cornering ABS, refined traction control, anti-wheelie, cruise control, and a third-generation up-and-down quickshifter: the 2021 and then 2022 MV Agusta Dragster 800 RR SCS closed the gap the brand had against the Japanese manufacturers and Ducati in this area. The 5.5-inch TFT display and the adaptive cornering headlight round out equipment now on par with the premium positioning. Because at 19,700 euros, we're talking about a steep price tag, well above a Street Triple RS or an MT-09 SP, and one that starts tickling certain sportbikes of higher displacement.

Who is this machine aimed at? Certainly not the beginner looking for an easy first bike. The MV Agusta Dragster 800 RR SCS targets the seasoned rider, one with an eye for sharp Italian styling, who wants to stand out in the sea of Japanese nakeds and is willing to pay top dollar for a unique temperament. The SCS adds genuine value in the city and during launches, but doesn't fundamentally transform the riding experience. It's a refinement, not a revolution. The 2024 version of the MV Agusta Dragster 800 RR SCS should continue this logic of progressive fine-tuning. For those seeking a naked with character, a distinctive sound, and a design that no one else offers in a motorcycle parking lot, the Dragster remains a choice driven by the heart rather than by reason.
