Overview

Who said you need to pull the clutch lever to launch off the tarmac? Not MV Agusta, that's for sure. With the 2020 Dragster 800 RR SCS, the Varese manufacturer plays a card nobody expected in the radical roadster segment. The concept boils down to three letters: SCS, for Smart Clutch System. An automatic centrifugal clutch, developed by American specialist Rekluse, that handles transmission engagement and disengagement on its own. The rider only needs to select gears with the foot shifter, and the mechanicals take care of the rest. The premium over the standard Dragster 800 RR is around 1,000 euros, for a device that adds just 36 grams to the overall weight and fits inside the original crankcase without any modification. On paper, it's an integration masterpiece. In practice, it's above all the promise of blistering launches, where a conventional clutch demands a surgeon's touch to avoid spinning or stalling.

MV Agusta Dragster 800 RR SCS

Beneath this very serious gadget, the 2020 MV Agusta Dragster 800 RR SCS stays true to its foundation. The 798 cc inline three-cylinder pumps out 140 horsepower at 12,300 rpm and 87 Nm of torque at 10,100 rpm, all squeezed behind a 13.3:1 compression ratio. The engine breathes high, very high, and demands revs to deliver its full potential. Compared to a Triumph Street Triple RS or a Yamaha MT-09 SP, the Dragster plays in a different price league at 19,490 euros, but it also delivers a level of refinement and sonic personality that the Japanese and British rivals simply cannot replicate. This Italian triple has a raspy, almost organic tone that alone justifies a closer look. Euro4 compliance hasn't dulled anything: MV revised the intake, the exhaust, and the internal components to keep the horsepower intact while cutting pollutant emissions in half and reducing mechanical noise by nearly 48%.

In terms of styling, the MV Agusta Dragster 800 RR SCS carries on the legacy of the Brutale from which it derives. A slim LED headlight, sculpted side scoops, forged spoke wheels. The rear end has been carefully reworked: fold-away passenger pegs, strip-style taillight, hollowed-out seat. The result is a tail section that's both aggressive and airy, a stylistic balancing act that few manufacturers master to this degree. It all sits on 168 kg dry, a contained weight for a machine of this caliber. The short 1,400 mm wheelbase and the seat perched at 820 mm confirm the nervous temperament of the beast. This is no tourer — it's an urban scalpel built for tight lines and snappy acceleration.

MV Agusta Dragster 800 RR SCS

The chassis makes no compromises. A hybrid tubular steel trellis frame with aluminum plates, a fully adjustable 43 mm Marzocchi inverted fork, a Sachs rear shock also adjustable across all parameters, Brembo brakes with radial-mount four-piston calipers biting 320 mm discs. The 200/50 ZR17 rear tire grips the road with authority. The onboard electronics run on the MVICS platform with ride-by-wire throttle, four riding modes including one fully customizable, eight-level traction control, and ABS. For a 2024 MV Agusta Dragster 800 RR SCS or its recent variants, the recipe fundamentally hasn't changed — proof that the foundation was solid from the start.

Who is this temperamental and magnificent Italian for? Riders who want to stand out, who accept paying the price for cutting-edge European craftsmanship, and who seek sensations that mass-produced roadsters simply don't provide. The 16.5-liter tank and 6-liter-per-100-km fuel consumption limit range to roughly 270 kilometers, which rules out long-distance touring. The Dragster is made for short, intense rides where every corner counts. With the SCS, MV Agusta has added a layer of usability without sacrificing any character. That's rare, and it deserves respect.
