What is the top speed of the KTM 990 SM Supermoto? 220 km/h. A figure that, stated like that, doesn't tell you much. But put it back in the context of a machine born to string corners together on full lean, brake late, and get back on the throttle like slamming a door, and it takes on a whole different dimension. In 2008, KTM decided to seriously beef up its Supermoto by taking the 75° V-twin from 950 to 999 cc. The message is clear: with the Ducati Hypermotard 1100 and BMW HP2 Enduro gaining ground in this segment, the Austrians have no intention of giving up a single inch of tarmac.

The heart of the matter is this twin, now pumping out 115 horsepower at 9,000 rpm and 95 Nm of torque at 7,000 rpm. The 101 mm bore paired with a short 62.4 mm stroke and an 11.5:1 compression ratio betray an engine that loves to rev and rewards the aggressive rider. Compared to the old 950, the gain amounts to 17 horsepower. On paper, that seems modest. On the road, the difference is felt from the midrange onward, where the extra torque shoves the machine forward with newfound authority. The six-speed gearbox does its job without drawing attention to itself, and the chain drive soaks up the jolts of committed riding.
The chassis has also been revised to handle this extra muscle. The chromoly trellis frame features a more open steering head angle, translating into sharper responses during direction changes. The 48 mm WP inverted fork with 200 mm of travel and the WP rear monoshock (210 mm of travel) form a solid, adjustable suspension package, built to swallow road imperfections without flinching. The braking follows the same no-nonsense approach: twin 305 mm discs up front clamped by four-piston radial calipers, and a 240 mm disc at the rear. On 120/70-17 and 180/55-17 tires, the KTM 990 SM Supermoto dives into braking zones with reassuring stability. The Aprilia Dorsoduro 750, lighter and cheaper, plays in a lower power league. The KTM owns its status as a sophisticated heavy hitter.
That said, you have to accept the trade-offs. The seat perched at 875 mm rules out shorter riders or seriously complicates low-speed maneuvers. The 191 kg dry weight is hefty compared to a 400 or 450 cc single-cylinder supermoto; we're in a different register here, that of a big twin that compensates for its mass with devastating engine punch. The 19-liter tank provides decent range for this type of machine, enough to chain sessions together without stopping every half hour. The dashboard, finally updated, now includes a tachometer. An obvious feature at this price point, but the previous version lacked one — hard to justify on a motorcycle listed at €11,690.
The KTM 990 SM Supermoto is aimed at an experienced rider, one looking for supermoto thrills with the power of a high-strung roadster. It is neither a first bike nor a leisurely cruiser. It is a pure pleasure tool, built for rapid-fire corner sequences, hard braking, and decisive throttle inputs. Against the 2008 competition, it remains the segment benchmark thanks to its generous engine and razor-sharp chassis, even if its weight and seat height act as natural filters. Those who pass that selection will find a demanding but tremendously rewarding partner.
