Overview

You loved the 821 Hypermotard? You'll adore the 939! A good recipe with sweeter ingredients, the same flavor in a more intense way – that's roughly what happens with this evolution of the Ducati-style supermotard.

Why increase the twin’s displacement? Not just to announce a larger cubic capacity. With this increase in displacement, the Hypermotard can meet Euro4 standards without losing any punch. Delivering a maximum of 110 horsepower at 9,000 rpm, and nearly 10 mkg of torque. The maximum values of these sensations are reached earlier in the rev range. Excellent, with the tough and playful character that will send shivers down your spine as you twist the throttle. The HM 939 actually displaces 937 cm3; let's not be surprised, the brand has several times "deviated" the name of these models from their actual displacement (the 916 SPS, the 749, the 1098…). To move from 821 to 937, the engine builders started by increasing the cylinder bore, from 88 to 94 mm. The stroke remains at 67.2 mm. Inside, some strategic parts are also changed. The crankshaft, cylinders, pistons, and cylinder heads are revised. The injection (52 mm) and anti-dribble clutch don’t need to be touched.

Few styling changes between the two generations of “liquid” Hypermotard. Almost nothing, we could specify. To recognize the 939, you’ll notice the increase in size of the silencer and the appearance of catadioptrics at the bottom of the fork tubes – one of the legacies of Euro4. Technically, few modifications are also present. Just enough to make it even more lively with a reduced wheelbase of 7 mm. Whether it’s the 821 or the 939, the machine has what it takes to be as entertaining as it is effective. The steel trellis frame remains faithful to the house tradition, firmly holding an inverted 43 mm fork. It is not adjustable, but the mono-shock is, in rebound and preload. The machine has gained a little weight, 6 kilos, but the braking system won’t have any trouble calming things down. 320 mm discs with 4-piston Brembo radial calipers will quickly plant you; the 245 mm rear disc with a 2-piston caliper will simply stabilize the machine in a too-aggressive turn.

ABS is reinforced, and even more so. It acts on 2 levels, one sporty and the other more secure. And can be deactivated for experienced riders. As with all Ducatis, it is not alone in the wiring harness. The 939 Hypermotard boasts adjustable traction control on 8 levels and 3 riding modes, each intervening in its own way on the ABS and DTC. Sport mode sends the 113 horsepower with optimal throttle response, the traction control is not too intrusive, and the anti-lock system is as effective as possible with moderate rear wheel lift management. In Touring, it’s still maximum power but a more progressive delivery, a more intrusive DTC, and the ABS is in mode 2, working for maximum stability. Urban mode reduces power to 75 hp, the DTC intervenes even more, and the ABS reacts in mode 2. Each Riding Mode can be adjusted according to the rider's preferences. Staying with the technology, LEDs are present in the rear light and front position light. The headlights are not (yet) full LED, road lighting still relying on bulbs.

A toy for adults, the 939 Hypermotard must contend with 2 drawbacks. First, its seat height. Its large suspension travel, 170 and 150 mm, raises the ground clearance while raising the seat to 870 mm. That’s starting to be a lot, and it’s one of the tributes of the category. A low seat is available as an option to lower it by 20 mm. The bike must also please you enough for you to accept an almost exclusively recreational use. That said, if you are looking for a bit of versatility with the same base of fun, the Hyperstrada 939 has more civil arguments. Conversely, the SP version pushes the sport into more muscular recesses.
