Overview
When KTM decided to bump its supermoto from 950 to 999 cc, the message was clear: no way was the Austrian firm going to let the Ducati Hypermotard 1100 or the BMW HP2 Enduro encroach on its conquered territory. The 2010 KTM 990 SM Supermoto rolls in with a 75° V-twin punched out to 115 horsepower at 9,000 rpm — roughly twenty more than the previous generation. Torque climbs to 95 Nm at 7,000 rpm, a figure that promises strong mid-range pull without needing to wring the engine to the redline. On paper, it's the most muscular machine in the segment. And on the road, all that grunt translates into a claimed top speed for the KTM 990 SM Supermoto of 220 km/h, a number that places the bike well beyond the usual playground of a supermoto.

The chrome-moly trellis frame has been revised to deliver sharper steering. KTM steepened the head angle, a choice that makes itself felt immediately during direction changes. The 48 mm WP inverted fork soaks up 200 mm of travel at the front, while the rear monoshock — also by WP — offers 210 mm. Serious hardware, calibrated to handle the inputs of a rider who pushes hard. The braking follows the same logic: twin 305 mm discs clamped by radial-mount four-piston calipers up front, a single 240 mm disc at the rear. The 120/70-17 and 180/55-17 tire fitment confirms the machine's road and track vocation, a far cry from the knobbies of a supermoto derived from a single-cylinder enduro.
Speaking of which, let's talk weight. At 191 kg dry, the 990 SM doesn't play in the same league as a 450 SMR. That's the price you pay for the twin and its 19-liter tank, which at least grants decent range between fill-ups. The seat, perched at 875 mm, won't do any favors for shorter riders, but it places the pilot in a commanding position — ideal for carving corners with weight pressed into the footpegs. This is not a Sunday-cruise motorcycle. It's a tool built for tight sequences, late braking, and powering hard out of turns.
Against the competition of the era, the 990 SM positions itself as the most radical choice. The Ducati Hypermotard 1100 banks on style and ease of use, the Aprilia Dorsoduro 750 on a more accessible price tag, and the BMW HP2 on off-road versatility. KTM opts for raw performance, even if it means sacrificing a bit of comfort. The dashboard has finally gained a tachometer — an absence hard to justify on the 950 at over 11,000 euros. At 11,690 euros, the price tag remains steep but consistent with the level of equipment: adjustable WP suspension, high-end braking, and improved fit and finish. The power-to-price ratio places the 990 SM at the top of the heap for anyone seeking a big-bore supermoto with no compromises.
The KTM 990 SM Supermoto is aimed at a very specific audience: experienced riders, comfortable on a tall and powerful machine, who want supermoto thrills from a bike equally capable of devouring a string of roundabouts or hammering through a track day. Beginners need not apply. Everyone else will find a characterful V-twin, a razor-sharp chassis, and that touch of typically Austrian madness that gives the orange brand all its flavor.
