Overview
What is the top speed of the KTM 990 SM Supermoto? 220 km/h. A figure that, stated like that, might seem modest compared to any Japanese roadster. Except we're talking about a supermoto with nearly a liter of displacement, perched on a seat 875 mm off the ground, with 17-inch rims and handlebars as wide as mountain bike bars. At that pace, 220 on the speedometer hits with the intensity of 300 on a faired sportbike.

In 2009, KTM decided to seriously beef up its Supermoto. Out with the 950, in with a 75° V-twin displacing 999 cc that pumps out 115 horsepower at 9,000 rpm and 95 Nm of torque at 7,000 rpm. Compared to its predecessor, the improvement is clear-cut: seventeen extra horsepower unleashed in a redesigned chassis. The chrome-moly trellis frame adopts a more open steering geometry, translating into sharper agility through direction changes. The kind of machine that turns a roundabout into a racetrack chicane and a back road into a playground. Up against the Ducati Hypermotard 1100 and its Italian diva attitude, or the BMW HP2 Enduro built more for dirt roads, the KTM 990 SM plays the radical supermoto card — one that makes zero compromises on temperament.
The chassis lives up to the engine's standards. A 48 mm WP inverted fork with 200 mm of travel up front, a WP monoshock offering 210 mm at the rear: the suspension package is tuned to handle the hard braking and sharp acceleration that make supermoto riding so thrilling. The braking setup is no joke either, with two 305 mm discs clamped by four-piston radial calipers at the front. Enough to anchor the machine with surgical precision. The 120/70-17 and 180/55-17 tires grip the tarmac and allow lean angles that most adventure bikes will never see.
Then there's the question of weight. At 191 kg dry, the 990 SM doesn't play in the same league as a single-cylinder supermoto. You feel that mass during low-speed maneuvers and tight transitions. That's the price you pay for a twin that delivers strong, consistent thrust across the entire rev range, where a single runs out of breath sooner. The 19-liter tank makes longer outings feasible without constantly watching the fuel gauge — a real advantage for those who want to chain sessions without stopping every half hour. The dashboard, finally worthy of the name compared to the 950's spartan instrumentation, now includes a tachometer. An obvious feature on a machine priced at 11,690 euros, but it took until this generation to get one.
The KTM 990 SM Supermoto targets a very specific audience: the experienced rider seeking raw sensations on the open road, someone who has tasted lightweight supermotos and wants to step up in power without abandoning the discipline's DNA. It doesn't forgive much, its tall seat rules out shorter riders, and its character demands skill to be properly exploited. But for those who can tame it, this is a machine that makes every ride memorable. A genuine riding tool disguised as a roundabout hooligan.
