The engine is the heart of the matter. The four-stroke single-cylinder block revs to 12,800 rpm with an ease that surprises for a 250. The 78 mm bore with a 52.3 mm stroke gives it a frank, almost square character that favors high-rev performance without sacrificing low-end flexibility. The 12.8:1 compression ratio is high for a mixed road-trail machine, but KTM stands behind that choice in favor of efficiency. The DOHC cylinder head with its four titanium valves and DLC-treated rocker arms minimizes friction losses, which is felt directly through the drivetrain. The Keihin fuel injection with its 42 mm throttle body manages fueling with a precision that carburetors of old simply couldn't offer.
