Overview
The valleys of adventure have never had so many contenders today. With enormous engines, substantial dimensions, omnipresent riding aids, and leaden prices. And then, there’s the Honda CRF 300 Rally. A long-distance trail bike with contained dimensions. Almost frail, yet with a surprising reach.
The motorcycle is built on the base of the CRF 300 L. With a design inspired by machines entered in competition in deserts and dunes. The 300 doesn’t aspire to such temerity but sees wide. This is evidenced by its more substantial and enveloping fairing. The machine wants to protect its rider, help him face the kilometers and difficulties.
Its strange asymmetrical binocular gaze, housing LEDs, is surrounded by a good-sized screen. Wider shoulders and a small engine guard completely change the appearance of this CRF. It’s as if it swallowed a soft rock. While the motorcycle is more enhanced, it is above all more suited to facing the turmoil of the surrounding atmosphere and to come.
Thus, more comfort, and more riding between each destination. The Rally has a 12.8-liter tank, which is 64% more capacity compared to the CRF 300 L. All these long-distance elements have a certain impact on the weight, with an 11-kilogram difference between the two versions.
Under this enhancing fairing, the CRF 300 Rally has the same technology as the L. Its 286 cm3 engine allows for gentle evolutions without seeking performance. Its 27.3 horsepower at 8,500 rpm is far from the cavalry of a pure-breed enduro machine, but the machine is designed to ride a bit everywhere and for a long time, not to do heavy work in the technical sections.
It will nevertheless come out with honors with its generous suspension travel. With 260 mm at the front and rear, we are already in the serious business. Its ground clearance of 275 mm is more than substantial, superior to that of a 700 Ténéré, and will allow you to tackle a good amount of difficulties. The 43 mm inverted fork and the rear shock absorber receive new settings for more stability and comfort. An engine guard is there to avoid damage to the mechanics.
The only differences between the 300 L and the Rally are the seat height (+ 5 mm) and the front brake. The disc measures 296 mm here, which is 40 mm more. It is bitten by a 2-piston caliper. The 220 mm rear disc is supported by a single piston. As for the wheels, there are no false pretenses. With 21 inches at the front, thin tires like eels and a good amount of tread on the IRC envelopes, this trail will dare to venture into all corners.
Our country had already tasted this type of adventure with the CRF 250 Rally. A 300 replaced it in 2021 in some countries but France did not have this version. The 2025 model is a direct evolution, and this time will be available. In dealerships but also and above all ready for great epics on a small scale. You will go slower but in many more places than most of the large, well-stocked trails. As for the desires for great travel...... you must be daring and patient.
