Overview
The FTR 1200 R Carbon is the fusion between the S Race Replica and Carbond’hier. Indian truly steps into the high-end segment with this motorcycle, highlighted by multiple premium elements. It wouldn’t be surprising if the design team drew inspiration from the Ducati S.A. Springfield; the intention was to create something powerful and valuable, and that’s exactly what’s been achieved.
This model delivers the best ground clearance. The FTR 1200 receives Öhlins suspension. Beautiful quality components consisting of a 43 mm inverted fork and an exceptionally accessible rear shock absorber. All adjustments are available, as one would expect from the wildest Indian. Wheel travel is 120 mm front and rear, compared to the 150 mm on previous models.
In addition to its Swedish suspension, the R Carbon benefits from the latest improvements in the family, including a tighter rake angle, 17-inch wheels, and the introduction of Metzeler Sportec tires. It already feels like the machine is no longer in the same dynamic as the first generation. 2023 adds efficiency with increased firmness in braking and a more performant clutch.
Öhlins components always make a statement. This corresponds to the “R” in the designation here. As it is complemented by the “Carbon” designation, we expect a beautiful selection of parts made from this material. For quality and a certain weight reduction, the motorcycle carries a headlight fairing, tank-side panels, and a front mudguard made of carbon fiber. What about the exhaust systems too?!? No, not yet. The twin exhaust is new (2023), but we would have liked something more in line with the name.
With all this, do we gain weight? Not at all; the FTR R Carbon is even announced with 2 kg more than the standard model but 2 kg less than the Sport. The distinction continues with a more elaborate seat with white stitching, a sport tank console, and a more muscular price tag. Expect €4,500 more than the base FTR.
No changes on the engine side, except for the improvements common to the family. Euro5 compliant, the twin produces 120 horsepower and 12 mkg with now more flexibility during acceleration. It can deactivate its rear cylinder to avoid overheating when the motorcycle is idling. The electronics that follow this engine are representative of the manufacturer's modernity: 3 Riding Modes, IMU Inertial Measurement Unit, traction control, cornering ABS, stability control, and anti-wheeling. On board, you will appreciate the USB socket for charging your MP3 (or other things), the cruise control and the Ride Command system on a new 10 cm color TFT touchscreen, Bluetooth, telephone pairing, etc…
With the FTR 1200 R Carbon, Indian demonstrates its sporty and premium appetite. This motorcycle allows it to cultivate its image as both high-end and eager to conquer new markets. Is it a streetfighter? Not quite, not yet…. It’s an offensive, closer to the lion than the cheetah.
