Overview

When Indian decides to play in the premium sportbike arena, the result is the 2024 Indian FTR 1200 R Carbon, a machine that unabashedly borrows the aesthetic codes of Italian bikes and dresses them up American-style. You can't help but think of what Ducati has been doing for years with its Monster and Streetfighter lineups. Except here, it's a 60° V-twin displacing 1203 cc pulsing beneath the tank, not a Desmo. The message is clear: Springfield wants its slice of the premium roadster segment, and this Carbon edition serves as the technological showcase of the range.

Indian FTR 1200 R Carbon

The heart of the matter on this R Carbon is the suspension. Öhlins front and rear, no less. The 43 mm inverted fork and mono-shock offer 120 mm of travel — 30 mm less than the earlier generations. A deliberate choice that signals a sportier, more radical direction. All adjustments are accessible, allowing you to fine-tune the chassis to suit your playground. Add a tighter rake angle, 17-inch wheels wrapped in Metzeler Sportec rubber, and Brembo braking with radially-mounted dual 320 mm discs, and you get a platform that has very little in common with the original FTR. The dynamic behavior has gained in precision what it lost in off-road versatility.

Let's talk carbon, since the name demands it. The headlight nacelle, tank side panels, and front fender all receive this premium treatment. It looks great, it feels high-end, but you're left wanting a bit more. The dual exhaust, though redesigned, retains conventional materials. For a bike that wears "Carbon" on its flanks and commands 18,990 euros — 4,500 euros more than the base FTR — you'd expect the nameplate to be carried through to the end. Especially since the scales don't tip in its favor: 235 kg wet weight, two kilos more than the standard version. The carbon lightens the wallet's conscience more than the tubular trellis frame.

On the engine side, the V-twin delivers 123 horsepower at 7,750 rpm and 119.6 Nm of torque at 6,000 rpm. Honest figures that put the machine up against the Ducati Monster SP or Triumph Speed Triple, without quite surpassing them on paper. The real added value lies in the onboard electronics: an IMU inertial measurement unit, three riding modes, cornering ABS, traction control, and anti-wheelie. Indian also had the good sense to integrate a cylinder deactivation system at idle to keep you from turning into a barbecue in traffic. The 10 cm TFT touchscreen with the Ride Command system, Bluetooth, and cruise control round out an equipment package that has nothing to be ashamed of next to the European competition.

So, streetfighter or not? The 2024 Indian FTR 1200 R Carbon plays a unique tune. Too dressed up to be a pure naked, not extreme enough to rival a Tuono V4 on track, it positions itself as a premium roadster aimed at riders who want to stand out from the all-Ducati or all-Triumph crowd. A bike with character, designed for the road and spirited rides, that wins you over with its strong identity but still needs to make a convincing case for the balance between the asking price and the actual grams of carbon distributed. The talent is there, and so is the price tag. Whether the public will follow Indian onto this turf remains to be seen.
