Overview

When SWM decides to tackle the segment of large-engine customs, the Italian brand doesn't play the card of discretion. The 1200 Stormbreaker lives up to its name: it's a machine built around a 45° V-twin, this architecture that smells of hot asphalt and long, straight roads. Yet, behind the aggressive moniker lies a coherent project, assumed in its biases, even if some technical choices raise eyebrows in 2024.

SWM 1200 Stormbreaker

The engine is the heart of the debate. This 1202 cm³ two-valve per cylinder V-twin deliberately marks a retro identity. There's no talk of cutting-edge technology: the bore of 88.9 mm for a stroke of 96.8 mm gives an undersquare engine, designed for torque rather than revving. And you can feel it in the specs: 91.2 Nm available from 4000 rpm, this is what pushes your shoulders into your back at mid-range, where you spend most of your time. On the other hand, the 61.2 hp at 5500 rpm seem meagerly dosed for this size. An Indian Scout Bobber of comparable displacement produces more power while retaining the same torque-first spirit. The Stormbreaker doesn't hide its game: it aims for primary mechanical pleasure, not timed performance.

The steel double cradle chassis and the 49 mm telehydraulic fork belong to a proven register. Nothing revolutionary, but a solid base that matches the displayed style. The two lateral rear shock absorbers reinforce this classic aesthetic. What is more questionable is the weight: 262 kg fully fueled for 61 horsepower, the ratio is tight. By comparison, a Moto Guzzi V9 Bobber weighs around 200 kg for a certainly lower power, but with a noticeably superior urban agility. The Stormbreaker clearly belongs to the category of machines that are best appreciated launched on open roads, not in a supermarket parking lot.

The 14-liter tank with a top speed announced at 200 km/h offers correct autonomy for relaxed touring use, even if the five-speed gearbox may seem tight on extended highway use. Chain transmission on this type of machine remains a functional choice, less premium than the belt of a Harley-Davidson Sportster, easier to maintain than a shaft transmission. Braking is limited to a disc per wheel, a minimalist configuration that assumes a composed ride, in accordance with the general temperament of the machine.

At €9990, the Stormbreaker positions itself in a competitive terrain. The entry price is attractive, especially compared to Japanese models like the Honda CMX1100 Rebel, which demands a more substantial budget. SWM relies on the cachet of Italian provenance and a defined style to convince buyers looking for an alternative to the great historical brands of the genre. The target audience is clearly the experienced rider, sensitive to the neo-retro aesthetic, who prefers a large, flexible torque to an engine that screams to express its talents. Beginners should consider the imposing size before letting themselves be seduced by the price.

SWM 1200 Stormbreaker

SWM signs here a sincere machine in its intentions, coherent in its construction, but which does not revolutionize anything. It assumes its compromises and its positioning of accessible custom with an Italian personality. It is not the most versatile motorcycle in the segment, but for those looking for the essentials of custom pleasure without falling into the glitter, it deserves serious attention.
