Overview
Can a Harley-Davidson really do the trick? That’s the question we all asked ourselves when the XR 1200 Sportster arrived in 2010, a showstopper that surprised everyone. Here, we are far from the cliché of the boulevard cruiser; the XR 1200 is Milwaukee’s answer to European riders seeking a raw character and a bit of agility. Designed in collaboration with teams from the Old Continent, this Sportster was shaped for our winding roads, with a chassis that has little in common with its sisters. The price of a 2010 Harley-Davidson XR 1200 Sportster in France, when new, hovered around €11,000, a bold positioning that placed it as a direct rival to muscular Japanese and Italian roadsters.

Under the 13-liter tank, it's the mythical 1203 cm³ Evolution V-twin that roars, but it has received a serious boost. With 90 horsepower released at 7000 rpm and a torque of 96 Nm available from 3700 rpm, it delivers a substantial punch. The weight, however, remains a Harley characteristic with 263 kg fully fueled, but the distribution and geometry change the game. The key component? A revised double cradle frame and, above all, a 43 mm Showa inverted fork, a first on a production Sportster. The brakes, with 292 mm discs and Nissin calipers, finally promise stopping power, not just decorative braking.
Faced with the competition, the Harley-Davidson XR 1200 Sportster plays a unique part. It has neither the surgical finesse of a Ducati Monster 1100 nor the unleashed fury of a Triumph Speed Triple of the time. Its asset is its soul. This V-twin that pulses at low rpm, the factory look from flat track racing, and this feeling of riding a piece of American history, but with which you can finally attack a corner without prayer. The 765 mm seat offers an engaging riding position, and the Dunlop Qualifier tires grip much better than purists feared. It is a characterful motorcycle for a touring rider who wants volume and presence, without completely abandoning the pleasure of back roads.
But let's be frank, it has its flaws. The five-speed gearbox seems a bit tight compared to the six speeds that have become the norm, and the consumption associated with the small tank seriously limits range for long trips. At 200 km/h top speed, it doesn't frighten a sportbike, but that's not its battle. Its true audience is those who find classic roadsters too aseptic and classic cruisers too soft. It is a machine for enthusiasts, an oddity in the range that seduced with its audacity.
Today, wondering what the price of a 2010 Harley-Davidson XR 1200 Sportster is in France is like searching for a nugget on the used car market. Produced in limited series, it has become a collector's item for those who believe that a Harley can have some bite. It did not revolutionize the brand, but it proved, for the duration of one model, that Milwaukee could leave the beaten path and shake up the codes when it really wanted to. A unique experience, to be savored for its rugged character and unique history.
