Overview
Do you remember the raw feel of an American motorcycle refusing to simply shine in the sun? In 2012, Harley-Davidson brought a disturbing proposition out of the shadows: the XR 1200 X. Far from flashy chrome, this Sportster dressed in matte black doesn't just play the tough guy. It was reworked in the shadows to bite, with a philosophy close to the European streetfighter, but with the Milwaukee accent.

Beneath this total black paint job, which almost erases all recollections of the original racing version, beats a deeply modified heart. The 1203 cm3 V-Twin Evolution engine has undergone a major overhaul: new cylinder heads, a more aggressive camshaft, optimized cooling, and even the crankshaft from the Buell XB-12. The result is a boost of 91 horsepower, a 26% increase compared to a classic Sportster 1200, with a meaty torque of 98 Nm available from 3700 rpm. It’s not the most powerful, but it’s surely the most feisty of the Harleys of the time, a breath of fresh – or rather hot – air in a range often serene.
This new fire demanded a chassis to match. Harley therefore equipped the beast with an inverted 43 mm Showa fork, fully adjustable, and piggyback lateral shock absorbers. Braking, entrusted to Nissin, gains bite with 292 mm discs at the front. With a stated weight of 260 kg fully fueled and a seat height of 795 mm, it doesn't have the lightness of a Japanese sportbike, but it engages the torso with an unprecedented frankness for the brand. Belt drive and the five-speed gearbox remain safe bets, but a sixth gear would have been appreciated for the road.
Who was this shadow warrior for? For the Harley traveler tired of the looks of others and seeking a touch of adrenaline without betraying his roots. For the curious motorcyclist, seduced by the raw aesthetics of streetfighters but attached to the torque and the deep sound of a V-Twin. With a 13-liter tank and a price of 12,390 euros at the time, it was not cheap, and its limited range made it a weekend or urban assault machine. Facing a Triumph Speed Triple or a Ducati Monster of the era, it lost in agility and pure performance. But it gained in personality, in character, in that unique aura of a Harley that decided to show its teeth. It was an experience, much more than a simple motorcycle.
