Overview

In 2024, the Norden underwent the necessary changes to ensure its longevity. Its exhaust system allowed it to pass Euro5+ emissions, and it gained a USB port, an emergency flashing hazard light system, and new graphics – with a single color scheme, as is customary. Its traction control evolved, now offering 10 levels of sensitivity (with the Explorer Riding Mode). A small evolution for a machine that knows how to assert its presence.

In terms of facts and reputation, Husqvarna is a recognized representative of off-road motorcycles. With a wealth of titles in motocross (especially in the 60s and 70s) and a now very wide range in MX and enduro. It was time to put wheels in the category of mainstream trail bikes, more precisely in the category of adventurers. That is the destiny of the Norden 901.

It seems born in the cold, in the heart of a forest. Fans of heroic fantasy will see in it a representative of the Stark clan. It’s a Nordic machine, with an austere and robust character. Not the type of bike to pose for the camera and hide at the first difficulty. Quite the opposite. With its biased profile, it’s reminiscent of the older KTM 950/990 Adventure.

Justly, the Katoche genetics aren’t so distant. The Norden 901 is a close cousin of the 890 Adventure. Logical, given that the Austrian firm owns Husqvarna. This allows for a significant transfer of technology and lower development costs. But every effort was made to avoid any suspicion of inbreeding. Apart from the identical aluminum swingarm, it’s impossible to find the slightest similarity between the two machines. While KTM claims to want to frolic between rocks and dust, the Norden aims more for the lands around the fjords and the hunt for Fenrir and Jörmundgandr.

The headlight is bulbous, the luminous appendages add to the identity, the front end asserts its intentions to go further than the copses. You can feel that the Norden wants more than just believe it. Its underpinnings claim marked capabilities. To this end, it relies on a tubular steel trellis frame where the engine plays a load-bearing role. This 889 cc twin develops 105 hp at 8000 rpm and 10.2 Nm of torque at 6500 rpm. Generous values without being exaggerated for a trail, close to a 1050 V-Strom, an 1100 Africa Twin, and strictly identical to the 890 Adventure. No problem spitting out dirt and relaunching vigorously; the engine shouldn't suffer from terrain or latitudes.

Water-cooled, fuel-injected with 46 mm injectors, equipped with a 6-speed gearbox with an up & down shifter, the engine is also equipped with a slipper clutch to handle engine torque. Abundant electronics will take care of all situations and moods encountered. The Norden is controlled via a ride-by-wire throttle sending information for processing by the riding modes. There are 3+1, defined as follows: - The "Street" mode provides the most dynamic throttle response, with a traction control (MTC) setting allowing for a little bit of wheel slip. - "Off-road" mode is throttled back. MTC is much more permissive to allow for rear wheel slip. Wheelie control is disabled to allow the front wheel to engage over obstacles. - In "Rain" mode, the throttle is heavily calmed, the power is reduced, and MTC intervenes very early. - The fourth mode, called "Explorer," is the customizable version for the user. This allows for parameterization of the assists as well as the dashboard display. Why 3+1? Because the "Explorer" mode is an option.

The electronic experience doesn’t stop there. The MTC (3 levels + off) is reactive in corners, as is the ABS. The anti-lock system also manages anti-stoppie and can be deactivated on the rear in the "Off-road" mode. There is also an engine braking control (MSR) to relieve the anti-dribble’s workload, a cruise control, and a 5-inch TFT dashboard. The same as on the Katoche, but fortunately, the graphics have been adapted to the spirit of the Husqy. The dashboard information is displayed with a style favoring the essentials and a certain rigor. After that, it knows how to do its job with regard to connectivity trends. You can pair a smartphone to control calls, music, navigation, route planning – don’t forget to install the Ride Husqvarna Motorcycles App to access all possibilities.

However, these are not its priorities that you are looking for when eyeing the Norden 901. You wonder more about where it can take you. Already, is the ground clearance enough before scratching the skid plate? With 252 mm, you are in a good average. Above most trail bikes and enough for a little bit of clearing. But not hardcore off-road. You would need more suspension travel and less weight. To give you a point of comparison, a 1300 GS proposes a ground clearance of around 200 mm; an Africa Twin is at 250 mm; a WRF is at 330 mm; a Husaberg raised the bar up to 390 mm. But be careful, for off-road use without seeking the extreme, there is already enough to do. The WP 43 mm inverted fork offers a stroke of 220 mm for its tubes. Compression and rebound are adjustable from two small knobs on the top of the tubes. Of the same origin, the shock absorber debates on 215 mm, has a remote preload adjustment and a rebound adjustment. A steering damper is also there to calm the front end when needed.

On the wheel side, the Norden asserts itself even more. No question of opting for spoked rims like trail-GT bikes or mixed tires. The bike wants to alternate between roads and undergrowth right away. The large-pavement tires are Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR, in dimensions perfectly suited for scrambling: 90/90 – 21 at the front and 150/70 – 18 at the rear. Spoked rims allow for mounting tubeless tires. The radial braking system consists of 4-piston calipers on 320 mm discs. Good dimensions for this category. The calipers are badged Husqvarna but are not manufactured in Sweden or Austria. They come from Spain, from J.Juan. The rear consists of a 260 mm disc with 2 pistons to bite it.

You haven’t escaped the fact that the Norden has a well-visible belly. This is another legacy of the Adventure: the tank. It descends very low, with chubby panniers on either side. Most of the 19 liters of fuel is located in front of the knees, lowering the center of gravity. This also offers more protection from the wind, the rain, the mud, the hedgehogs, etc. The seat takes advantage of this to be more slender but remains high. Stiff suspensions are paid for with a seat that climbs. Not yet needing a ladder with the 859 mm of elevation but tall legs or flexibility. Conversely, it can be adjusted by 20 mm more – more practical in off-road. Those who are cold will appreciate being able to order heated versions as accessories.

The Husqvarna 901 Norden seems to come from the other side of adventure. It hasn’t yet proven itself, but its identity suggests that it has already experienced solid experiences. Relying on a base already known from KTM, it already presages its potential. The appearance is much more Nordic, more conquering of territories populated by reins, elves, and myths.
