Overview
What is the price of the Honda CRF150R and, more importantly, how does it stack up against the small 85cc two-strokes it faces in the supermini category? The question is worth asking, because this competition motocross bike, released in 2006 for the 2007 model year, has never really stopped dividing opinion. On one side, two-stroke purists criticize its weight and mechanical complexity. On the other, those who have tasted the progressive power delivery of its four-stroke engine never want to go back. At 5,699 euros for the 2022 version, the Honda CRF150R remains a serious entry ticket into the world of competition for ambitious young riders. But the price is justified by a level of finish and a technical foundation that few competitors in this segment can claim.

The heart of this machine is its liquid-cooled 149.7cc Unicam single-cylinder engine. Yes, the Honda CRF150R is indeed a 4-stroke, and that is its very signature in a world dominated by premix engines. With 23.5 horsepower at 12,500 rpm and 14.1 Nm of torque peaking at 11,000 rpm, this engine isn't trying to impress on paper. Its strength lies elsewhere: in the linearity of its power curve and its ability to deliver usable torque across the entire rev range. The Unicam valve train system, a Honda exclusive, reduces mass and friction at the top end of the engine while retaining four valves per cylinder. The bore and stroke of 66 x 43.8 mm, combined with a compression ratio of 11.7:1, produce an engine that demands revs but never punishes a rider who is still learning. The Keihin FCR carburetor with accelerator pump offers crisp throttle response, while the dual-pump lubrication system isolates engine oil from clutch particles. A technical detail that reveals the machine's competition pedigree.
On the chassis side, the Honda CRF150R weighs 84.4 kg wet. That is heavier than an 85cc two-stroke, but the steel-tube semi-double cradle frame provides straight-line stability that the small KX or YZ models cannot offer as naturally. The 37 mm Showa inverted cartridge fork, fully adjustable, works in concert with the rear mono-shock through the Pro-Link system with variable leverage ratio. Both units accept fine compression and rebound adjustments, allowing the machine to be tailored to the rider's weight and the track profile. The 1,285 mm wheelbase and 336 mm ground clearance place this bike in a geometry designed for motocross circuits, not for Sunday leisure rides. The seat, perched at 866 mm, confirms that the CRF150R is aimed at riders who already have the inseam and the experience to handle the whoops.
The front and rear disc brakes with sintered pads get the job done without excessive sophistication. The 4.2-liter fuel tank limits range, but on a motocross circuit, nobody rides for more than thirty minutes straight. The close-ratio five-speed gearbox pairs well with the engine's character, and the chain drive remains the standard in this class. For those looking for a used Honda CRF150R for sale, the 2007, 2009, 2018, and 2019 model years remain good deals, as the mechanical foundation has changed very little over the years. The Honda CRF150R motocross bike is specifically designed to serve as a stepping stone toward the CRF250R and CRF450R, and it fills that role with thoroughly Japanese rigor. It does not forgive neglected maintenance, but for a young rider aiming for the supermini class, it is the four-stroke benchmark on the market.
