Overview
Who, today, buys a large adventure bike to actually cross the Sahara? The image of the solitary wanderer with his jerrycan and compass has largely given way to the modern traveler, one who seeks comfort and autonomy before sand in the wheels. Honda understood this well, and the evolution of the Africa Twin Adventure Sports, especially since its switch to the 1100 engine, is a blatant testament to this transformation. This machine no longer hides behind an explorer’s pseudonym; it clearly displays its ambitions of a premium GT, heavily armed for the road.

The change is physical, and it speaks to riders whose knees are worn out from long journeys. With a 835 mm seat height, it is more accessible than many of its rivals, a crucial point when you have to juggle a wet weight of 253 kg. But the real strategic shift is under that mass: the abandonment of the 21-inch front wheel for a 19, and the reduction of suspension travel. Honda is now drawing a clear line on some primary off-road prowess to gain stability, maneuverability, and grip on asphalt. The mixed tires that replace the AX41T confirm this direction. This Africa Twin Adventure Sports 2024, more powerful and more touring than ever, is a force to be reckoned with for long-distance travel.
The engine, this 1084 cc twin-cylinder, has not seen its rated power of 102 horsepower increase, but its character has been reworked. The goal was to make it fuller at mid-range speeds, and the result is tangible with torque increased to 112.8 Nm, available lower in the rev range. This extra punch, coupled with the recalibration of the optional DCT gearbox, makes the bike more intuitive and less eager for gear changes. And let's talk about this robotic transmission: with over 40% of Africa Twin models sold in recent years equipped with this option, Honda knows that it meets a real need for simplicity, especially when the 24.8-liter tank promises stages of several hundred kilometers. The autonomy of the Honda Africa Twin Adventure Sports 2024 becomes a significant argument for travelers.
The technological arsenal is now up to its price, which starts at €19,699 for the manual version. The 6.5-inch TFT screen, Bluetooth connectivity, Apple CarPlay, and the myriad of riding modes (Tour, Urban, Gravel, Off-road, and two customized) place the bike among the best. Four-level traction control, cornering ABS braking, and even a wheelie limiter show that the central IMU is exploited without restraint. The Showa EERA semi-active, pilot-controlled suspensions adjust their behavior according to the selected mode and the load (solo, duo, with luggage), offering comfort that rivals the best of the competition, even if the German lean correction system remains one step more sophisticated.
So, who is the rider of this machine? It's the one who wants to cross continents without compromising on comfort and safety, but who no longer has the age or desire to fight with a motorcycle too specialized in off-road riding. It targets the same audience as the BMW R 1250 GS Adventure or the KTM 1290 Super Adventure S, but with a different philosophy: less raw performance, more road versatility, and ergonomics often judged to be easier to live with. Compared to its little sister, the standard Africa Twin, this Adventure Sports is a statement: extreme escape has been traded for diplomatic raiding. It is the ultimate tool of the technological traveler, a vessel that transports you with remarkable efficiency, but which, along the way, has lost a little of the wild soul of its ancestors like the legendary Africa Twin of 2019. It is a logical, almost necessary evolution, but which sometimes leaves the purist looking nostalgically at used models, those where sand in dreams was still a tangible possibility.
