Overview
Who buys a GS for the paint job? Yet that's precisely the gamble BMW is offering with this 2018 R 1200 GS Exclusive, the premium variant of the best-selling adventure bike on the planet. On paper, the promise is one of superior refinement. In practice, we're mainly talking about a dedicated color scheme, a painted logo on the tank, stainless steel radiator covers, gold brake calipers, and a grey frame on a black drivetrain. Attractive, certainly. But at €16,845, you're entitled to expect a bit more than a cosmetic makeover.

Beneath this crafted exterior, the mechanicals remain identical to the other versions. The 1170 cc flat-twin delivers its 125 horsepower at 7,750 rpm and 124.5 Nm of torque at 6,500 rpm. Familiar, proven figures that place the machine right in step with a KTM 1290 Super Adventure or a Ducati Multistrada 1260 in terms of raw performance. The BMW flat-twin nevertheless retains its very distinctive character: a linear, never brutal surge of power, with that slight hip-sway when shifting gears that always makes seasoned riders smile. The six-speed gearbox paired with shaft drive delivers faultless comfort over long distances. That's the natural playground of this GS.
The tubular steel trellis frame with the engine as a stressed member, the Telelever fork, and the Paralever EVO single-sided swingarm form a suspended package of formidable effectiveness. The 190 mm of travel up front and 200 mm at the rear swallow rough roads with thoroughly Bavarian composure. The 244 kg wet weight is forgotten from the very first corners thanks to well-considered mass distribution. The braking system, with its two radially mounted 305 mm discs and four-piston calipers up front, inspires confidence even when fully loaded. The 850 mm seat height remains accessible to most rider builds, and the 20-liter tank allows generous stints between fuel stops.
The 2018 model year brings a few welcome technological updates across the entire GS range, Exclusive included. The "Connectivity" cockpit with its color display seriously modernizes the readability of onboard information. An emergency call system and LED auxiliary lights round out the equipment. Nothing revolutionary, but sensible refinements for a machine that had already undergone its major transformation in 2013 with the adoption of combined air-liquid cooling and significantly more advanced electronics. The 2017 BMW R 1200 GS Exclusive offered essentially the same foundation, without these connected additions.
The central question remains: should you go for this Exclusive version rather than a standard GS or the more adventure-oriented Rally variant? Let's be frank — the difference boils down to cosmetics. No additional equipment, no semi-active ESA suspension as standard, no Shifter Pro or keyless ignition. All of that is available through optional packages, accessible regardless of the version chosen. The real danger with a GS is the BMW configurator: between the Pro riding modes, the dynamic ride-height adjustment, and the panniers, the bill climbs fast. For the long-distance tourer and the weekend back-road enthusiast alike, the R 1200 GS Exclusive remains above all a matter of aesthetic taste. The engine and chassis have nothing left to prove. What's the price of a 2017 BMW R 1200 GS Exclusive on the used market? Often well below the new sticker price, for a nearly identical machine. Worth pondering before signing on the dotted line.
