Overview
Who, in 2013, could boast of offering a motorcycle capable of crossing a continent without flinching, while celebrating nine decades of history? BMW Motorrad, obviously. With the BMW R 1200 GS Adventure 90 Years, the Munich manufacturer didn't settle for slapping a commemorative sticker on its flagship adventure bike. It dressed the beast in a refined livery, blending sapphire black metallic, olive anodized aluminum, and gold accents on the fork tubes and brake calipers. A nickel-plated brass plate even replaces the usual logo on the upper triple clamp. The message is clear: this GS isn't just another Adventure — it's a collector's item that's meant to be ridden.

Beneath this ceremonial dress lies the proven air- and oil-cooled 1170 cc flat-twin, the one that has earned its stripes over hundreds of thousands of kilometers across the globe. With 110 horsepower at 7,750 rpm and 119.6 Nm of torque available from 6,000 rpm, this boxer twin doesn't try to impress on paper. It banks on consistency, mid-range flexibility, and that unmistakable mechanical signature — the slight lateral sway at startup that every GS rider knows by heart. The whole package is channeled through a six-speed gearbox and a shaft drive, a reliability guarantee for long-distance travelers who have no desire to lube a chain between Ouarzazate and Timbuktu.
It's in the realm of long-distance touring that this Adventure justifies its existence alongside the standard GS. Its 33-liter tank pushes fuel stops further apart. Its Telelever front suspension with 210 mm of travel and Paralever rear with 220 mm soak up battered trails without turning the rider into a punching bag. The spoked wheels — 19 inches up front and 17 at the rear — happily accept dual-sport tires for venturing beyond the tarmac. On the competitive side, the Triumph Tiger Explorer and KTM 1190 Adventure offered similar arguments, but neither could rival BMW's worldwide dealer network nor that community of travelers who gather every summer in the Balkans or on Moroccan trails.
The 256 kg wet weight and 915 mm seat height serve as a reminder, however, that this motorcycle isn't aimed at smaller riders or freshly licensed ones. It takes confidence to maneuver this ship at low speed, especially on gravel. The braking, handled by twin 305 mm front discs clamped by four-piston calipers, proves equal to the task of slowing down all that mass. The 200 km/h top speed is beside the point — nobody buys an Adventure to set lap times on the highway. What matters is the ability to devour 500 kilometers in a day without ending up with a wrecked back, and on that front, the BMW recipe has been working for years.
At €16,645 at the time of release, this 90 Years edition represented a measured premium over the standard version for a distinctly more refined finish. The asphalt grey subframe, granite metallic cylinder head covers, two-tone olive and black seat — every detail betrays particular care. For the globe-trotter who wanted a machine capable of anything, from the Paris ring road to the Atlas mountain trails, with a touch of exclusivity thrown in, the BMW R 1200 GS Adventure 90 Years ticked every box. It arrived admittedly at the end of its cycle before the water-cooled engine revolution, but that's precisely what makes it a sought-after machine today among purists of the mixed-cooling flat-twin.
