Overview
Who said a Harley-Davidson, especially a Sportster, had to please everyone? Take this 2003 XLH 1200, a concentrated dose of American archetypes that makes some smile and others grind their teeth. With its large 1200 cm3 V2 engine, it lines up figures that would make a Japanese pistonhead laugh: just 70 horsepower for 272 kilograms all fueled up. But that's where all its genius, or stubbornness, lies. Its mission is not to hit apexes, but to deliver a raw sensation, a rumbling sound steeped in history transformed into an earthquake at high RPM.

The heart of the beast, reworked in the late 1990s with new cylinder heads and camshafts, is a true nostalgia trap. It delivers its massive 92 Nm of torque from 4000 RPM, inviting you to play with the five-speed gearbox to keep it in its power band. In the city, it's a delight, the engine responds with that deep sound and slow push that characterizes the Harley twin. On the other hand, forget the madness on national roads or the pursuit of the TGV. At 170 km/h top speed, the wind buffets you, the vibrations of the rigid-mounted block numb your wrists, and the 12.5-liter tank brings you back to order after 150 miles. It's not a touring motorcycle, it's a statement.
And it's perhaps on this point that it seduces or exasperates. The position is relaxed, even slumped, perfect for jeans rides but disastrous for attacking a tight corner. The ridiculous 170 mm ground clearance scrapes the tarmac at the slightest inclination. Yet, it has technical arguments. The braking, with its two front discs, is much more bite than the black legend of Harley brakes suggests. The 39 mm fork and Showa shock absorbers handle the inevitable imperfections of our roads correctly. It is not lacking in qualities, it has simply chosen its camp.
So, for whom does this Sportster 1200 run? Clearly not for the beginner intimidated by its weight or the touring rider seeking autonomy. It is the ideal mount of the urban epicurean, the customizer who wants an authentic base, or the one who seeks a pure mechanical experience, far from electronic aids and flashy plastics. At more than 11,000 euros at the time, it was not cheap, but it offered, and still offers, access to the myth without artifice. A myth that vibrates, that smells of hot oil, and that reminds you with each acceleration that progress, sometimes, is just a matter of perspective.
