Overview
She is like the James Bond saga. The Speedmaster retains her name, her mission, her devotion to the British crown. But the face sometimes changes to revitalize the character's game. At Triumph, especially in the Modern Classics range, subtlety is the master craftsman. Observing the 2026 Speedmaster, it is striking that something has changed, but what…?
Is it the frame? Is it the engine? Is it her purpose? No, none of those. Yet, the appearance seems a little more streamlined, the style a little more elusive. This is thanks to a delicate refresh brought about by a few elements. Primarily the fuel tank, which loses some of its roundness as it elongates. This operation gains her 2 liters of capacity. Or so one might say. Because with 12 liters previously, this cruiser could sometimes be just short on range.
The design began with an ornament on the headlight, continues with the more slender Triumph badge, and concludes with a completely new duo of seats. Wider, with thicker foam, they will provide additional comfort – something that is expected of this type of machine. A new, straighter handlebar will make the riding position more natural without sacrificing the well-known relaxed posture on the Speedmaster.
She still has a few surprises in store for us. Like her lightweight spoked wheels, for more responsive handling. Or her ability to be restricted to A2 power, intended to make young riders (a rather small customer base for such a machine…) grin. And even the adoption of an IMU to provide more precise traction control and upgrade the cornering ABS.
There are also reworked turn signals, a more stylish under-seat fairing, a USB-C port integrated into the dashboard, and fewer cuts on the engine fins. Thus adorned, this long-distance Bonneville has never been so confident as she is today.
The Euro5 update carried out in 2021 made the Speedmaster’s engine cleaner but she didn’t stop there. First, the twin: no change in power but a bonus with reduced inertia. Then, a revision of the Riding Modes for greater efficiency. The chassis incorporates a larger fork - 47 mm - and the redesigned seats promise more comfort. Finally, a glance at the past, from which the English bike has known how to assert herself.
With the first Speedmaster, Triumph offered a custom worthy of British phlegm, with the right amount of relaxation, posture, and cruising. The 865 cm³ twin pushed gently, with a certain character, and one asked for no more. All of this is swept away by a wave of the hand with the 1200 Speedmaster. With a much more pronounced character, a far more expressive engine and a dose of high-quality technology, the motorcycle joins the Balliol clan and goes into the fray; with a very marked Bobber aftertaste.
Because the 1200 Triumph Bobber and Speedmaster are closely linked. They share the chassis and engine without any consanguinity. Perfect for lovers of looks and emotions, who will not fail to appreciate the pseudo-hardtail frame. The triangular swingarm appears fixed on the rear part while Triumph took care to hide the shock absorber under the seat. Initiated on the Bobber, this suspension strikes the eye as much on the new Speedmaster. Can we conclude that this one would be nothing more than a Bobber with 2 seats? Not so much, not sure. The low-rider that interests us tends more to claim the definition of cruising than that of a showbike.
Lady, the Speedmaster has her own identity, which clearly differentiates her from the Bonneville and the Bobber. The first is steeped in her role as a classic roadster, the second is perfect in her role as a hot-rod. Our protagonist is more covered, with a much more massive front end. The front wheel changes from 19 to 16 inches, and gains a second brake disc. Increased efficiency and muscular looks therefore invite themselves into the ride. The headlight wanted to make a significant place for itself and it shows. More imposing than the minimalist eye of the Bobber, the Speedmaster's optics benefit from a chrome rim extending into a lateral spine and a unique light signature. Changes continue at the front with a wide handlebar, participating in a more relaxed riding position. This is also the job of the footpegs, which migrate forward, at the edge of the engine casings. The rider thus places himself in a cool attitude. With a seat not very high, fixed 710 mm from the ground. The rear section takes full measure of a crew compared to the Bobber. The rider's seat is more generous and is joined by a passenger seat. The rear fender is larger and more enveloping, finishing a motorcycle much more assertive than its 865 predecessor.
The twin is a must, in its range as in its category. And in 1200, we benefit from a generous hand. The block originally comes from the Bonnie T120 but benefits from a High Torque setting introduced by the Bobber. This translates to more torque – 10% more than for the large Bonneville. And former Speedmaster owners will feel a big change. The engine sends 42% more torque. With 10.8 mkg at 4000 rpm, the heart lifts all kinds of emotions without problem. The power also increases significantly. We had 61 horsepower on the 865 -> we benefit from 78 horses on the 1200. Let's specify that an assist clutch reduces lever effort. Without sacrificing the look: the fins are present, the water cooling is discreet, the injection is hidden behind faux carburetors, the twin is pleasant to look at and aggressively finished by the short and beveled pots of the Bobber.
And technologically above all else. Reduced to the sole fruit of injection on the 865, electronics are very largely present on the 1200 Speedmaster. Being part of the Bonneville family, it is logical that she recovers the goodies of the siblings. Thus present are a Ride-By-Wire throttle, a disconnectable traction control, cornering sensitive ABS, LEDs for all lighting appendages (headlights, turn signals, plates), two injection maps (Rain or Road) and a cruise control operated by a single button.
Are you ready to cruise!? Not quite. Triumph knows how to place a beautiful catalog of accessories within its Classic range. For the 1200 Speedmaster, no less than one hundred gudgeons will make you grin. The Speedmaster offers much more generous amenities with this 1200 cm³ conversion. Triumph has not only done a duo with its Bobber but really modified it into a cruiser of name and stature. Muscle and technology are there, all that's missing is a long road ahead of her.
