Overview
A twin that vibrates like a tractor, drinks like a sieve, and struggles beyond 130 km/h, but that we still love. The 2000 Sportster 1200 alone sums up the Harley-Davidson paradox. Here, you don’t buy a spec sheet, but a piece of mechanical legend, rugged and authentic. This 1202 cm3 Evolution engine, with its new cylinder heads and reworked carburetor in 1998, delivers a mere 70 horsepower. A pittance compared to an equivalent Japanese bike. But the important thing is elsewhere: it spits out 96 Nm of torque from 3200 rpm, a wave of low-end grunt that propels you forward from the first glance at the clutch lever. In the city, it's a king. The twin responds with a quarter turn of the throttle, the relaxed position on the seat at 74 cm is perfect for traffic, and the sound… ah, that deep rumble that transforms into an authoritative growl.

But let’s not be mistaken, the Sportster is a homegrown animal. Its 13-liter tank condemns you to fuel stops every 200 km, and its brick-like aerodynamics clearly limit any aspirations for long journeys. At a theoretical top speed of 170 km/h, you’ll already be shaken like a plum by the vibrations of the V-twin solidly anchored in its steel cradle. It’s not a bike for eating up the highway, that's obvious. Even the braking, revised with two front discs, requires anticipation. It does the job without frills, but will never rival the bite of a Brembo caliper on a sportbike.
So who is this 272 kg machine fully fueled for? Not the track enthusiast seeking performance, nor the touring rider obsessed with comfort. The Sportster 1200 is the ultimate weapon of style, the ideal companion for those who prefer sensation to speed, presence to efficiency. It’s a bike that is lived more than measured, where each ride becomes a raw sensory experience. Back then, it took nearly 11,500 euros to enjoy this privilege. An expensive price for modest figures, but derisory for carrying an entire piece of motorcycle mythology all by yourself.
