Overview
When Harley-Davidson decides to play in the power cruiser category, it doesn’t do things halfway. The 2014 VRSCDX Night Rod Special is this unequivocal statement, an aesthetic and mechanical punch that shakes up the traditional image of the brand. Here, we’re not talking about nostalgia or leisurely rides, but about a 60° V-twin engine named Revolution, a 1246 cc engine that delivers 123 horsepower and more than 110 Nm of torque. Figures that, on a custom chassis, immediately raise the question: who is it really trying to compete with?

The answer is clear. With its 302 kg when fully fueled, its 43 mm black inverted fork and Brembo double disc brakes at the front, the Night Rod Special directly targets the territory of the V-Max and the Rocket III. But it does so with a radically different style, an omnipresent matte black that envelops the hydroformed frame, the swingarm and even the spoked wheels. This dark rod aesthetic, accentuated by a 240 mm rear tire, is a visual declaration of war. We are far from the sparkling chrome, we enter the era of dark custom.
The riding position confirms this break. A seat only 675 mm from the ground, a low and wide handlebar reminiscent of dragsters, very forward-set foot controls: you are installed in an attacking position, almost lying on the machine. This extreme ergonomics can divide. It offers impressive control at high speed and surprising agility for this weight, but it sacrifices long-distance comfort without compromise. This is not a motorcycle for travel, it is a motorcycle to dominate a stretch of road or to impress in the town square. The 18.9-liter tank, hidden under the seat, is for energetic outings, not for continental crossings.
At nearly 18,000 euros at launch, the Night Rod Special positioned itself as a rare object of desire, a high-end and radical alternative to conventional cruisers. It required a significant budget, but offered in return a unique experience, blending the raw feel of a Harley with the dynamics of a disguised sportbike. For those looking for a used Harley-Davidson VRSCDX Night Rod Special, it represented the opportunity to access this atypical proposition, this fusion between custom culture and modern performance. This model did not seek to please everyone; it targeted the rider who wanted a custom without compromise on power, a mechanical showstopper capable of flirting with 210 km/h without denying its hot-rod soul. A bold gamble that marked its time.
