Overview
Can one be a true Harley-Davidson product without the traditional pushrod V-twin engine? That was the bold gamble the VRSCDX Night Rod Special attempted in 2009. This machine is not just a custom; it is a declaration of war sent by Milwaukee to the purists, a power cruiser that wanted to prove that the brand could also play in the realm of high performance. Beneath its dark appearance and dragster lines, it hides the Revolution engine, a 1250cc four-valve-per-cylinder V2, an almost revolutionary architecture for Harley at the time. With 123 horsepower delivered at 8500 rpm and a torque of 111 Nm, it promised sensations very different from those offered by a Softail or a Dyna.

The riding position is immediately evocative. A seat at 640mm high, a wide and low handlebar, advanced controls: you get in like on a drag strip machine. The announced weight, 307 kg fully fueled, is considerable, but is partly compensated by a low center of gravity thanks to the tank located under the seat. The look is entirely turned towards the dark side, an aggressive black-on-black with laced solid wheels, a hydroformed black frame, and an engine whose fins are highlighted with lacquer. It is an aesthetic of power, far from the sparkling chrome, which directly targets a public fond of modern and muscular customs. The tires, a 240/40 at the rear on an 18-inch rim, complete the impression of a colossal mass ready to launch.
Technically, the Night Rod Special shows courageous choices. The brakes are four-piston Brembos, with ABS, a level of equipment rare on cruisers of the time. The 49mm fork is inclined at 34°, contributing to its visual aggression. But this motorcycle is not a machine for beginners or touring riders seeking comfort. The ground clearance of 107mm is limited, and the very committed position can become tiring on long distances. It is made for dynamic outings, to feel the power of its Revolution engine that requires going up in the rev range, unlike Harley habits. Its maximum speed of 210 km/h places it in direct competition with Japanese or European power cruisers, such as certain versions of the Yamaha V-Max or the Ducati Diavel which will arrive later.
Today, searching for a used Harley-Davidson VRSCDX Night Rod Special can be an interesting approach for an experienced rider who wants an out-of-the-ordinary custom. It represents a particular segment of Harley-Davidson history, an attempt to merge custom identity with sporting performance. Its original price, 18795 euros, was high, which perhaps explains its limited distribution. It is not suitable for those seeking the characteristic rumble and vibrations of a Big Twin. But for those who want a black, mean cruiser, with a unique mechanical character and brakes that do honor to a sportbike, this Night Rod Special remains a unique and endearing proposition. It is the boss of a world it did not completely manage to conquer, but which it marked the minds.
