Overview
Who said a motorcycle had to be practical? The 2015 Sportster Seventy-Two is the absolute antithesis of common sense, a manifesto on two wheels that prioritizes style over utility. Imagine yourself on this flat solo seat, your arms outstretched towards the mini ape-hanger perched over a meter from the ground, scanning a distant horizon above the peanut tank. With its 7.9 liters of capacity, you'll spend more time at the pumps than on the road, but frankly, does it matter? The goal here isn't to cross a continent, it's to embody a piece of Californian chopper culture, to rumble the Evolution V2 in the streets of your city as on Sunset Boulevard.

Beneath this deluge of chrome and whitewall tires lies a modernized heart. Harley has finally deigned to equip this 2015 model as standard with ABS, and the front braking benefits from a more generous 300 mm disc. We breathe a sigh of relief, because stopping 251 kilograms fully fueled with the grace of a custom requires a bit of bite. The revised electrical system and keyless start via the Smart module add a welcome touch of modernity to this mechanics that, let's face it, smells of heritage. The 1202 cm3 twin, an architecture that is thirty years old, delivers its 96 Nm of torque at 3500 rpm with that characteristic growl, a low and soft push perfect for leisurely strolls, but which quickly runs out of breath past 6000 rpm and its 65 horsepower.
Faced with competitors like the Yamaha Bolt, more agile and much cheaper, or even the Sportster Forty-Eight from the same family, the Seventy-Two plays a radical part. It is more extreme, less accommodating, and clearly less versatile. Its audience? The pure and hard customizer, the one who seeks above all a personality-rich base for their projects, or the Harley fan ready to sacrifice all comfort and all logic on the altar of looks. The high handlebar, the forward controls, and the low 67 cm seat sculpt a riding position that is anything but natural, reserved for short rides where you are there to be seen.
So, is the Sportster Seventy-Two a good motorcycle? Absolutely not. It is heavy, underpowered, fuel-stingy, and terribly uncomfortable. But that's precisely what makes its charm and its reason for being. It is an object of passion, a retro-futuristic style accessory that speaks to the soul more than to reason. At nearly 12,000 euros, you're not buying a means of transport, you're acquiring a fragment of American mythology, a smile with every start, and the certainty of never going unnoticed. For the rest, there are others.
