Overview
The Heritage Classic tells a story all its own. Custom for some, cruiser for others, almost a tourer in the end, it is assuredly the most travel-ready of the Softail models. And not just that. On its handlebars or in the village square, it embodies and ensures an attractive power imbued with the scents of yesteryear.
For the uninhibited, there’s the Fat Bob; for her, it’s the horizon. And in its mirrors, one can guess the Hydra Glide from the mid-century. Fortunately, its technical underpinnings are much more up-to-date. Because the Heritage Classic completely revised its chassis and mechanics a few years ago.
Thus equipped with the Milwaukee-Eight to propel the crew properly. Larger, braver, more powerful, more torquey, it gives the Wisconsin eagle larger wings. Twin with 8 valves—a radical change for Harley’s finned mechanics—it claims an agility unknown in the upper rev range, without sacrificing its hammer blows down low. Enough to take even more pleasure over the kilometers on the Heritage. With this 114 cubic inch version, the temptation is great to travel many kilometers and enjoy a big breath with each acceleration. With a displacement of 1868 cm3, the Big Block M8 develops here 15.8 mkg. A generous force of torque, initially reserved for the high-end models of the Touring range.
Engine vigor; and riding bravery. It was time to move up a level for road efficiency. The frame benefits from a major overhaul to demonstrate superior efficiency. With a design requiring fewer welds and fewer parts, the carbon steel assembly gains weight and rigidity (+ 65%). A larger and more rigorous fork works in concert with a shock absorber placed between the seat and the top of the swingarm. No more duo of shocks under the engine. Like all Softail models, it announces better ground clearance and better behavior. In essence, the new generation Heritage Classic has lost 17 kilos.
This chapter of the Heritage also includes a paragraph of revised comfort with lockable, watertight rigid saddlebags and a retouched windshield, half tinted black. Nice for style but what about visibility? Let's not forget the LED headlights and the cruise control.
