Overview

We are facing a moment of ambiguity. How can this Chief be named Bobber when the Chief itself has become a bobber? Is the name merely a facet? Isn’t the Springfield custom revival swimming against the current? Wanting to be reduced to the essentials while maintaining an idea of imposing presence contributes to provoking a real mental workout. OK, this Chief Bobber Dark Horse isn't going to sit still.

Let’s continue with the contradictions. This type of machine is supposed to be as streamlined as possible. Yet, the Bobber Dark Horse receives trim pieces that the Chief completely disregards. Style takes control, with a fendered fork and shocks, a headlight nacelle, spoked wheels, and a large front tire that seems to square off the road. But where the motorcycle clearly marks its presence is through the riding position it offers the rider.

The Ape-Hanger handlebar puts your arms above the horizon while the forward footpegs allow you to advance your boots to the edge of the frame. There we are, now, in the custom culture. We’re going to roll out some badly-mannered street cowboy, with metallic belches and gargled noises. This is the moment for the big Thunderstroke twin.

This engine displaces 1890 cm3, or 116 cubic inches for Americans. Power doesn’t like to express itself in horsepower with this type of engine. What’s important is the torque, the force that this Chief can deliver and the emotions it evokes. Pushing in recent years to 16.5 mkg at 2,900 rpm, the heart of the motorcycle took a slap in 2025 and brings its torque back to 15.9 mkg, at a 3,300 rpm. This unit can deactivate its rear cylinder if necessary to prevent it from getting too hot under the trousers.

Faced with this huge metal organ, it’s hard to believe that the clutch has been softened. Yet, that’s where Indian focused its attention in 2023. A little more flexibility and less effort on the left hand to further relax gear changes.

These confessed attributes, the Chief Bobber Dark Horse cannot boast of more or less equipment than the standard Chief. Both are equipped with a tubular steel double cradle frame - breaking with the aluminum profile structure of the previous generation - 300 mm brake discs (1 per wheel), a 46 mm fork partnering with a pair of shocks, a 15-liter tank, a triple injection mapping, keyless start, a color TFT circular instrument panel with phone piloting, GPS function and multiple features, a USB charger, a 12V socket, a speed regulator, ABS and a multicolored LED headlight.

Can we do more bobber than that? American communications departments have accustomed us to this kind of eugenic case, lyrical appellation, and flavored presentation. There’s only one way to really grasp it: take it alone between the night of the streetlights and the character of the asphalts. Subject to accepting a large bill to add compared to the Chief.
