Overview

A dramatic shift for the Chief. It has evolved so much that you could almost talk about a new model rather than a new version. Between its technological advancements and the dynamic stylistic transformation of its motorcycles, Indian is moving from nostalgia to forced modernism. Very likely to avoid falling into the image of a centuries-old Harley. Following the FTR lineage, the Chief Dark Horse is taking a good kick at the fence.

A jolt, questions, almost a slap for enthusiasts. From a majestic and opulent cruiser, the Chief is almost becoming a bobber. The silhouette has become so visually lighter that you would swear the machine has lost a quintal, at the very least. With this modern Chief, the famous skirts on the wheels have almost disappeared. A strongly rooted identifying feature in the collective vision of an Indian. Omnipresent in the range just a few years ago, these characteristic fenders are now only found on the Roadmaster and the Springfield.

Everything has been revised, everything, from top to bottom. Even the frame! Only the big twin seems to have escaped the frenzy of the designers. Yet, it too benefits from this resurgence.

The Thunderstroke has increased its displacement to 1890 cm3, a dominant figure within the range. With 79 cm3 more, a few horsepower have been gained and, above all, torque. But 2025 dealt it a good kick behind the newtons. It drops from 16.5 mkg to 15.9 mkg. Moreover, this peak has shifted 400 rpm higher, at 3,300 rpm. Consider this: it remains a generous surge generated by this mechanical sculpture, highlighted more than before. The tank has significantly reduced its presence, both in terms of its appearance and its capacity. It still holds 15.1 liters in this element, which seems balanced on the spine. Consequently, the twin truly stands out as THE highlight of this Chief.

Common to many models, this big block received a new clutch with improved flexibility in 2023. The wider friction zone and reduced lever effort improve comfort and smoothness of gear changes.

The Chief 116 ci now has a different frame, consisting of a set of steel tubes with a design very different from the old structure, formerly made from aluminum castings. The 46 mm fork has not only lost all its trim but also a brake disc and the Sioux head on the fender. The latter has been reduced to the bare minimum, while the rear has received a vigorous chainsaw attack. Also note the less assertive seat, the eradication of the headlight fairing and most of the trim, new spoked wheels with refined and machined spokes, a pair of crossover-type missile launchers for the exhausts, and a Drag Bar handlebar to gauge the change in personality. The Chief goes from senator to Bad Boy, loses 44 kilos and wants to be much more agile. The weight loss, combined with a more aggressive riding position, combined with a shortened wheelbase of 75 mm and a straightened steering head angle will take this Indian towards a much more responsive behavior than before.

The seat is low (662 mm), the wheel is high (19’’), the tire is wide (130), the headlight is minimalist, and the technology is complex. If the Chief seems streamlined to the point of coming out of a workshop in the back of Kansas, its electronic equipment has nothing to envy to a European bike. It is equipped with a circular TFT screen. Seen from behind, you would mistake it for a good old-fashioned dial full of springs and ticks. But from the front, you are in the future: the 4-inch Ride Command touchscreen can display a GPS navigator, several display types for classic information (speed, rpm, etc.), pilot music and smartphone calls, control onboard information on the motorcycle and select the appropriate Riding Mode. Yes, a rider's mood can change; so can the behavior of the Chief. It has three Riding Modes, Tour – Standard – Sport, with a more or less velvety distribution of power. Add to that an impressive multi-focal headlight borrowed from the FTR, a keyless start system, cruise control, a USB port, ABS and you get an American motorcycle that mixes as much steel as silicon.

The Indian 116 Chief Dark Horse is another step into the future for the brand, in order to establish a strong presence in the present. The name comes from the 1920s but the desire to enjoy the road (with a certain audacity) is as far removed from that era as it is from the New World. That has changed, dreamers and dreams are not the same; Indian has understood this perfectly. It will just be necessary to accept to look at its motorcycles differently.
