Overview
Some names carry history before the engine even turns over. The Super Chief was one of America's great mid-twentieth century trains, linking Chicago to Los Angeles under the colors of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, carrying artists and celebrities who prized comfort and prestige. Indian borrowed that name to give its Chief a touring vocation, without offering the proportions of an ocean liner. That ambiguity is precisely where the machine's character lies.

In practical terms, the Super Chief Limited is a Chief equipped for long-distance travel. The fork fairing, spoke wheels, 16-inch front wheel, leather saddlebags, large windshield, and wide cruiser handlebar form a coherent package for weekend touring. You climb aboard at a seat height of 665 mm, which remains accessible, then discover a cockpit enriched with a four-inch touchscreen TFT display, integrated GPS, traction control, ABS, cruise control, and three riding modes. Keyless ignition is included. The 15.1-liter tank imposes a modest range, while the saddlebags offer a combined 36.7 liters of storage — enough for a weekend for two, provided you pack light. This is clearly the custom-tourer register rather than the grand tourer; the Roadmaster remains the true ocean liner of the lineup, with considerably more serious carrying capacity.
The Thunderstroke 116 — a 49-degree V-twin displacing 1,890 cc and air-cooled — puts out 90 horsepower and, more importantly, 156 Nm of torque available from 3,300 rpm. It is not the power that defines this machine's character, but the way that thick torque expresses itself at low revs, with a mechanical honesty no figure can fully capture. On the Super Chief Limited, the engine is presented in all its chromed glory, every case polished, every Crossover exhaust gleaming like a mirror. This is the exact counterpoint to the Dark Horse variant, which blacks out everything without exception — engine, exhausts, mirrors, fuel cap. Two opposing aesthetic philosophies sharing the same steel tubular frame, the same wheelbase shortened compared to the former Chief 1811, and the same 324 kilograms to move with a full tank.

That weight deserves attention. Thirty kilograms more than the naked Chief, for a 15-liter tank and saddlebags of modest capacity — the math doesn't always favor twisty roads. The competition is unforgiving as well: Milwaukee's Softail Sport Glide offers a similar concept with quicker transformability, and the old Dyna Switchback had already explored this territory with a well-defined personality. Indian counters with more modern electronics and a more assertive visual presentation, starting with the FTR-inspired LED headlight. At €24,590, the machine sits at the top of the segment, roughly 25% above the base Chief.
The Super Chief Limited is aimed at riders who want a versatile motorcycle without aesthetic compromise: custom during the week, tourer on Friday evening. It is not a revolution within the Indian lineup, and the concept is not new in the world of big American twins. But the recipe is solid, the execution refined, and the Thunderstroke remains one of the most expressive engines in the segment. For those who can accept the proportions and the price, the Super Chief delivers on its promise of a machine built for travel without taking itself too seriously.
