Overview

Eight years. Six models dressed in black and gold before the Chief Bobber Dark Horse finally earned its ticket into the Lynchburg distillery. When Indian and Jack Daniel's join forces, it never quite resembles an ordinary marketing exercise, and this seventh collaboration is no exception.

Forget the previous editions, more polished, almost ceremonial. Here, the result from the Klock Werks Kustom Cycles workshop is more reminiscent of the back room of a roadside bar than a collector's showroom. Real whiskey was incorporated into the paint, then applied by hand to the bodywork. Jack Daniel's emblems colonize the front fender, the saddlebag plates, the exhaust junction, and the Montana Silversmith badge set at the heart of the V-twin, where the serial number also appears. A "Cloud Silver" treatment on certain surfaces visually strips the bike down, bringing the engine forward rather than drowning it in darkness. The spoke wheels play along, catching the light with a frankness the standard Chief Bobber typically refuses.

Beneath this worked-over exterior, the 1,890 cc 49-degree V-twin hasn't changed its nature. It delivers 161.8 Nm at 3,200 rpm, a truck-like torque that arrives early in the rev range and turns every acceleration into a demonstration of quiet force. The 90 horsepower doesn't embarrass the spec sheet, but this engine was never sold on outright power. It leans on displacement, on character, on that 103.2 mm bore with a 113 mm stroke that gives the V-twin the personality of a refined American tractor. Up against a Harley-Davidson Fat Bob or a Milwaukee-Eight 117, the debate quickly turns to a question of temperament rather than figures. The Chief answers with "180 km/h top speed and 311 kg on the scales," which firmly places this machine in the category of unhurried cruising rather than spirited riding.

The onboard equipment tells a different story than the raw aesthetic might suggest. Three riding modes, keyless start, four-inch TFT display with the Ride Command system, cruise control, USB port, ABS, full LED lighting. The low 662 mm seat height makes it easy to get acquainted, but also serves as a reminder that this motorcycle is aimed at average-sized riders, not giants. The 15.1-liter tank promises reasonable range on flat roads, less so once the revs climb. The belt drive and six-speed gearbox do their job without surprises.

The real issue with this edition is its calculated scarcity. 177 units worldwide, put on sale on March 14th at exactly noon, with France legally sidelined for reasons combining advertising regulations and restrictions on alcohol. At €23,053, the machine is aimed at North American collectors as much as riders. For fans of assertive customs looking for something less common than a standard catalog cruiser, this Chief Bobber Dark Horse Jack Daniel's ticks every box of the desirable — provided you have the geographic luck and the reflexes needed to get your hands on one.
