Overview
What if the most discreet of the SportClassic models was also the most sensible? In 2008, Ducati launched this GT 1000, a clear nod to the 750 GT of the 1970s, but with a radically different philosophy than its café racer siblings. Here, no low handlebars that torture the wrists, but a straight, almost touring-oriented position, set on a wide seat 82 cm from the ground. This is the grand touring version of the family, one that prioritizes comfort on the track and could almost overshadow a Monster or an ST in mixed use.

Under the 15-liter tank with classic styling beats the heart of the beast: an air-cooled Desmodromic twin, the archetype of Ducati mechanics. With 92 horsepower at 8000 rpm and a meaty torque of 91 Nm, it doesn’t hold back. The suppleness is there from the low RPMs, typical of these V-twins, but it can also rev with a vehemence that surprises for a "classic." The precise six-speed gearbox engages the gear changes, and the final chain sends the power to a rear tire that is perhaps a little too wide, a 180/55 that slightly weighs down the steering and tarnishes the agility promised by the trellis frame and inverted fork.
Justly, the chassis of this Ducati Sportclassic GT 1000 deserves attention. The tubular steel frame is a work of art, supporting an inverted 43 mm fork and two laterally adjustable preload shock absorbers. The whole assembly, a little firm as standard, offers solid and reassuring handling, capable of swallowing winding national roads with genuine pleasure. The brakes, double discs at the front, are effective without being aggressive, perfectly in line with the spirit of the machine. But it is here that the problem lies a little: with 207 kg fully fueled, the GT is not lightweight. It imposes a certain serenity in driving, far from the nervousness of a Sport 1000.
So, who is this moderno-retro for? Clearly for the rider who wants the inimitable style and sound of a Ducati, but without the disadvantages of a racing position. It is the ideal machine for Sunday rides, elegant urban commutes, or road trips on secondary roads. Its price, around 10,000 euros at the time, positioned it as a character alternative to Japanese classics. If you are looking for pure café racer style, turn to the Sport 1000. But if you want a classic Ducati that you can use every day, with that little something extra that no competitor can offer, the GT 1000 is a bold and terribly seductive gamble. A motorcycle that proves that the charm of the old and the efficiency of the modern can go hand in hand.
