Overview
Imagine a machine that, beneath its peaceful antique appearance, conceals the beating heart of a modern Ducati. The SportClassic GT 1000 is precisely this paradoxical creation, a motorcycle that plays hide-and-seek with its own character. One could qualify it as the least fast of the SportClassic family, but this apparent moderation actually hides a versatility much more useful for daily road use. With its high handlebars, welcoming seat, and this engine always ready to respond, it carries the "Gran Turismo" name with a surprising accuracy.

Its essence goes back to the 750 GT of 1971, but it is much more than a simple replica. The difference with its more radical counterparts is striking: abandonment of clip-ons for classic handlebars, distinct tank and exhaust lines, a truly two-person seat, and two lateral shock absorbers. These choices make it a fundamentally different machine, a proposition more oriented towards travel than towards tight turns. The engine, a desmo twin air-cooled 992 cc, is the soul of this creation. With 92 horsepower at 8000 rpm, it does not seek extreme performance, but offers a typically Ducati availability and suppleness. It pulls from low revs and climbs without hesitation to the limits of the tachometer, delivering its 9.4 Nm of torque with a muscular elegance.
Road behavior is consistent with this philosophy. The trellis frame and suspensions, a bit firm but precise, offer a stable base. The brakes, a double disc at the front and a single at the rear, are effective without being aggressive. Everything is calibrated for safe and pleasant riding. However, one element disrupts this harmony: the tires. Their overly wide and round profile, particularly the 180/55 at the rear, limits the initial liveliness of the GT 1000. They make changes of direction a little less crisp, spoiling some of the pleasure that the rest of the motorcycle promises.
With a wet weight of 207 kg and a 20-liter tank, this Ducati SportClassic GT 1000 positions itself as a refined alternative to the Monster for those seeking more comfort, and as a lighter and more stylish option than the ST for touring riders. Its price, around 10,000 euros at the time, placed it in a niche segment. It will not convince the pure racing enthusiast, nor the one seeking an exact replica of an old motorcycle. For the latter, the Sport or Paul Smart Edition versions will be more obvious choices. But for the enthusiast who wants a Ducati with authentic character, usable daily, and with timeless style, this GT remains a seductive and unique proposition.
