Overview

When Ducati releases a name as evocative as Pikes Peak, it’s not without reason. The American mountain race, forbidden to motorcycles for quite some time, remains a myth that Bologna exploits with a certain skill. After a 2021 without a representative in the catalog, the Ducati Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak 2022 relaunches the tradition with a clear program: to transform a high-performance trail bike into something more akin to a sportbike in disguise than a Sunday adventurer.

Ducati Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak

The first sign is not misleading. The single-sided swingarm returns on this version, a charming element that the standard V4 generation had abandoned. The Marchesini forged aluminum rims go to 17 inches, opening the choice towards resolutely sporty tires. This change in diameter, combined with a weight reduction of 2.7 kg compared to the V4 S, already says a lot about the machine's intentions. The ergonomics follow the same logic: the footpegs move back and up by 10 mm, the handlebar descends by 15 mm and narrows by 18 mm, more rigid to the grip. The rider finds themselves projected forward, in a position that naturally calls for loading the front into corners. This is far from the posture of a peaceful globe-trotter.

The engine, for its part, has not changed its recipe compared to its family members. The 1158 cm3 V4 delivers 170 horsepower at 10500 rpm and 125 Nm at 8750 rpm, 12 horsepower more than the previous twin-cylinder Pikes Peak. For those who wonder how many horsepower the Ducati Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak has, the answer places the machine at the level of a Panigale 1198 of the older generation, on a motorcycle that still accepts luggage in the rear. The weight, fully fueled, announced at 238 kg remains correct in the category, and the max speed of 250 km/h will not surprise anyone. What really changes is the electronic accompaniment. A Race mode makes its appearance, with a more progressive rev limiter management as it approaches the redline and a recalibrated shifter to allow downshifts even at over-rev. The electronics no longer restrict, they accompany.

Öhlins suspensions have always been the signature of the Pikes Peak versions, but they functioned in manual adjustment on the latest editions. The Ducati Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak 2022 switches to the Smart EC 2.0 active system, with electronically piloted damping both front and rear via Skyhook. Some purists will regret the subtlety of manual adjustment, but the gain in accessibility is real for the rider who does not want to take out the wrenches with each change of road. The braking comes directly from the Panigale V4: Brembo M50 Stylema four-piston calipers on dual 330 mm front discs, two-piston caliper on 265 mm rear. It’s hard to do more serious than that.

The rest of the technological equipment leaves no room for emptiness. Front and rear radar for adaptive cruise control, blind spot detection, wheelie control updated, cornering ABS recalibrated, 6.5-inch TFT screen with navigation. The Ducati Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak technical specifications are those of a motorcycle that has left nothing to chance. And yet, you can’t ignore the price: 28,990 euros at launch, exactly the price of a Panigale V4 S at the same time. This pricing is both a statement of intent and an argument that hones the target audience. This machine is not for beginners or for the great traveler with tents and a stove. It speaks to the experienced rider who wants the versatility of a trail bike without giving up the sensations of a sportbike, and who is willing to pay the high price for that compromise. For fans of the Ducati Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak used, the secondary market offers 2022 machines at more accessible prices, and the potential for personalization with Ducati Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak accessories such as the Akrapovic titanium-carbon exhaust as standard remains a significant resale asset.
